What a useless prick Custer was, even I know not to split your troops until the enemies disposition is known, an over promoted buffoon with a massive ego who only thought of more glory for himself, the bleeding idiot.
Almost immediately after the battle, once Major Reno and Captain Benteen gave their reports of the incident, General Terry, Custer's immediate superior, announced the battle was lost because Custer unwisely divided his force into three groups and tried to attack a village that held a vastly superior number of warriors.

Custer wasn't a General in 1876. He was a Lieutenant Colonel. He was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General after graduating last in his class at West Point in 1861 because trained officers were needed during the War Between The States. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel in the regular Army after the war ended and that is the rank he held when the Battle of The Little Big Horn was fought.
