The only singer\songwriter that I'd pay to see today, she's poetry in motion.

The guitar work by Hendrix is impressive, especially since he is playing a straight, clean guitar without effects; there is another version of this cut, but with horns and the guitar pushed back into the mix; the Isley Brothers were very instrumental in Jimi's early career; they really encouraged him, a change from the other R&B acts and stars who hired Hendrix only to fire him when he started getting more attention than the performers he was supporting; the Isleys heard about him and sought him out; they found him unemployed and offered him an audition (the Isyley Bothers were a famous, well established band at the time); Hendrix demurred because he had no guitar; when asked, he admitted he pawned it for eating money; the Isleys offered to buy his guitar out of pawn, but Hendrix sheepishly also admitted his guitar had no strings; the Isleys said they would buy his guitar and throw in a new set of strings, so Jimi agreed to an audition; Jimi played Twist and Shout for them and they were blown away and offered him the gig with the band and, since Jimi's guitar had seen better days, they offered to buy him a new guitar if he would sign on; Jimi shyly asked' "Can I have a white Stratocaster?"... ...and the legend was launched... ...decades later, the Isley Brothers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame (1992) and Ernie Isley, who had learned a lot from JImi, performed this nod to the guy whose guitar he helped get out of pawn... On the subject of Hendrix and guitar players influenced by him, I stumbled upon this performance a few days ago by a Korean guitarist who is astonishingly good; I like his take on the song, neither being slavishly not for note nor straying very far from the feel and mood of the number... ...now, if he'd only shuck the Robert Fripp stage dress influence... <O>

This song was a Queen B-Side of a single, but it has a very interesting story... Queen's drummer, Roger Taylor wrote this song; when Queen was in the process of selecting two cuts, A-Side and B-side, of a soon to be released single, Roger became very animate about his song , I'm In Love With My Car being selected for the B-side; the A-Side had already been selected, with all the queen members including Roger agreeing, but there was some quibbling about selecting the B-Side; Queen were about to go into a recording session and Roger went to a cupboard/closet and locked himself in, refusing to exit until the other band mates agreed to put his song on the B-Side of the next single; after trying to persuade him to come out, they finally agreed to Roger's terms and the session began... A bit petulant and childish, you say? Well, you see, at that time the writers and performers of the songs on either side of a single received the exact same royalties for each single record sold; if Roger's song had only been included as an album cut, the royalty would be considerably less; Roger knew what he was doing, business-wise; just being on the B-side of a hit single would be very profitable... ...especially if the A-Side was... ...Bohemian Rhapsody... <O>

I like his "Orpheus in the Underworld" it's a lot of fun. My Science teacher in High School had a dog called Offenbach.
