Propbeanie,
I have not run into updates for windows 10 not allowing SH4 to start. My new laptop is running windows 10 pro. my previous laptop is running Windows 10 home. I generally never let my home version update. I had it tweaked to a point so it would not. it is still on build 19 or something like that. So I never saw that on that computer. My pro version updated til I remembered I had not stopped the updates. I did not have any start problems for SH4. Now I have only had the laptop for a few months though. So your thoughts on the possible interference of windows 10 is interesting. I do have a few other laptops with windows 10 home on them. I might install SH4 on one and let it do the update and see what if any problems happen. Just my thoughts.

Another thought hit me. could the hardware of the computer have a influence on how window reacts? most of my laptops are I7's. one is I5, the HP is a AMD. My new one is I9. all intel ones have the dual video intel/nvidia. just throwing it out there.

Thanks

I have not had a 3rd mission not complete, and on the 4th, it seems to be about a 66% OK, with the 5th being a 50-50 & the sixth being a 1 in three chance of completing. I do not remember having seen this before, neither in FotRSU nor any other mod or Stock. I now wonder if you and Comder can look at your OS build info please. Click on your Windows Start button (lower-left of course), Settings, Update & Security. You'll probably have to scroll down a bit n the next page to click on OS Build Info, and then scroll down on that page a bit to see "Windows Specifications" - which you might not have, if you haven't updated lately. Under that is a "Copy" button (with the recent updates) that you can click on, and then "Paste" into your next post. Mine looks like:
Edition Windows 10 Home
Version 21H1
Installed on ‎5/‎17/‎2020
OS build 19043.1052
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3740.0
The "Version" and "OS build" lines are what I am most curious about for the both of your computers.

But I am curious about a potential Windows interference, since the last update "trashed" all three of my installs' configurations, and I had to alter their Properties pages to get the game to function... SubSim member mazzi a while back mentioned adding the FotRSU version of the game to the Windows registry with running TDW's SH Validator, and I experimented with adding my v1.39 & v1.46 installs to the Windows "Path" statement, and that does make a difference in game play and some effects. My current "testing" and "modding" installs do not have that, so I'll also see if maybe that will make a difference also... all I know is that it is weird, whatever it is.
Ahoy, propbeanie...

radar Re: Update... to post #3388...

Ahoy, propbeanie...

Per My reporting in, in post #3388...

I did follow up on My thinking of hot footing it back to Surabaya & resupplying. Good thing I did, & shall elucidate as to why...

On arriving, restocked up on food, fuel & fish... then beat feet back to Sibutu passage.... Upon getting back there, @ 02 hundred'ish... crossed back into the engagement zone, and proceeded on a northward track to re enter the passage itself. Approximately 03:45-03:50'ish... Got the completion gong from the bell that that patrol was, in all means, completed.

Yay Me... I'm happy, my crew is overjoyed... & am now making for area D4, to await further orders from HQ.

On the whole of this... whole incident, got Me to looking at the area, in question... & I have some... armchair QB thoughts here... so don't keel haul Me, just throwing out some probabilities here.. that could possibly account for it... maybe...

1st thought... is, is the area for being recogged as being 'in the zone' appropriately in sync, size wise with the identifier of where the patrol zone is... could it be, that the green ID circle is say... a tad bit bigger that the area to be patrolled & known that you are in that area... If not, then that could throw the whole thing into a snafu moment... & shall elucidate further as to why..

While in the area, there was a number of times, I came close to, but NOT going out of the circle on the Northern side of it... which, is where I ran into the 1st 2 vict.. erhm, sinking volunteers... merchie's. Of which I radioed in, before launching an attack... of which I got a message back stating to attack & use My discretion as to which target to sink, adding that as a sub objective to patrolling for the '6' days, that turned into a week, roughly... which, when I sank them both as I was feeling a bit evil that upon completing patrol 1, was with no targets sunk)I then set up & attacked & completed that sub objective.

That's possibility 1...

2nd thoughts...

Liken unto thought 1.. this one, hypothesizes, that instead of 1 circle being bigger than the other.. the root cause here, is both area circles are indeed the same... but... are not in sync with locality... meaning, 1 is a bit higher located on the whole mapping... while the other.. is offset lower than the other.

In this instance, the green circle is set a bit offset north of the circle area that realizes that you are in the patrol zone... leaving a bit of gap, that should you venture off into that gap.. well... it's not going to realize that you are still 'in the zone', even if you stayed inside the lines, so to speak.. using a coloring metaphor here.

To be frank, I am leaning heavily on thinking that this hypothesis, is the more likelier of the 2... possibly. It could stand to reason, that thought 1 could explain it.. heck, either of these would, to be frank about it...

Any who... that's My thoughts, on it... as I said, just don't shoot the messenger, thanks...

Hope this helps track down the issue & helps resolve it...

M. M.

Those were the first things I checked. In this slightly zoomed-in look, you can see that the green circle is actually a pinch smaller than the actual "zone", which is the little bit of a "shadow" just outside the green. I try to do that with all of the missions, and then use a text editor to put both on the same lat / long coordinates. So, not that.

I also did the "time" thing check, where it say "patrol for six days", it really should have completed on 5.93 days, since I used the figure of 8640 hours. I usually do not have the time set to what you see, but is usually a bit shorter, sometimes triggering an automatic 2nd objective. I am still leaning toward a Windows 10 thang, versus the DirectX v9.0c library. Of course, I am not certain of that, but we have seen how un-random SH4's "random" can be, and it uses DirectX for its "seed". I hope to get into testing a couple of things for that shortly. I'll get back with you in a few hours...

Propbeanie,

I just finished testing the saved game. I used M.M.'s 3 different ideas. I went to Atka for refit. I then returned to my patrol area. I set a search pattern that brought me close to the edge of the circle. After 5 days, no completion. So I did his last idea about the size of the circle. I just did circles around the center marker. After 5 days, got the completion. So I am not sure if it was a combo of refit and doing a tight circle or just the tight circle. This is just more info for you.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Default surface radars detecting air target?

During my game playing, I frequently got crew reports for radar contacts of aircrafts when SD radar is turn off. So I go to "Sensors_sub_US.sim" and find the "height ranges" of surface radars are quite high. The SJ-1 radar can detect target within 15000 meters.

I'm not sure if it's on purpose or not. Comparing equivalent data (for example the SJ-1 radar) of TMO2.5, we can see that the maxheight should be much less for such "surface" radar.

Thanks for looking further into your own situation Comder.. The circle and MapZone used for the patrol for your mission is built the same as MM's, so the green circle is slightly smaller than the zone it marks. I do want to ask you fellows though, if either of you shot any torpedoes enroute to the Objective that wouldn't complete? The DynamicMiss assignments have a couple of lines like:
MinimumFuelPercentage=40
MinimumAmmoPercentage=25
which I had always assumed meant "at the time of assignment", but perhaps it influences the ability to complete? I don't know. I'll try similar to what you fellows just did on the huge test mission I have. I came to no conclusions last night after putting the game folder in the Windows Path variable, though it does seem that the graphic effects are better... I don't know though - a person's imagination can run rampant in things like this...

What you are showing is also the Stock settings. The FotRSU team will leave that alone for now, and let you do a "TMO-style Radar" add-in, if you want to. Most of the FotRSU dummy radars are set similarly to that.

Alright i would try. Maybe it's not "TMO style", it's just realistic.

Ducimus did alter some of those settings, if I remember correctly, from what Stock had, but the height figure is the same. I just went through and compared stock to FotRSU, and there are other differences there also. Whatever you do, we can call if "flaminus's Radar Settings"... lol

Propbeanie,
I did not use any torpedoes while going from one mission to the problem mission. I do have a habit of saving the game after each mission. I do this mainly because it ends up being late. I hope this assists you.

Thanks

Ahoy, propbeanie...

Like Comder, at least on this particular mission set... I did not let any torps loose, not until I got into the 'Sibutu passage' area.

During My, 'hot footing' it from Surabaya... to Manila... to Basilan passage... to Sibutu, I came across ships, just NOT viable IJN ones.

It was NOT until I got into I think... end of day 1, maybe early hours of day 2, of patrolling Sibutu, that I ran into My 1st 2 vict... erhm, sinking volunteers... merchie's, which as previously reported... I phoned home on them & got orders to sink on My discretion... which, frustrated with the lack of targets during patrol 1... (which I ran into a Minekaze escorting a Chitose tender, radio'ed in & got told to not engage that other assets were being sent in, I closed as close as I was able to on the surface, no less... & fired off 2 fish at the Chitose. Both missed, as the Chitose took evasive maneuvers.. the Minekaze was well behind the Chitose, for an escort, which seemed rather odd for it to be trailing behind... & yes, it was underway, not sitting stationary. After the 2 fish missed, it sped up & started searching, but never came any where near to where I was, as by the time I sent the fish off... I disengaged, so as to technically say that I followed orders... and was exiting the area to My patrol area, which was Apari for 10 days, as I recall. That was in the 1st patrol.. & the only viable enemy targets I came across... all the others were U.S. or other countries that were NOT on the sink & destroy menu. ) I promptly targeted both merchie's & sent them on a 1 way trip to meet Ol' Davey.

I think, of the last 2 I sank in the area... the last 1 was making to the area of #5's sinking. With # 5, was not in their viz zone yet & was making for hitting them from a 90 degree angle, when all of a sudden, they started hotfooting it in My direction. After a terse, tense game of cat & mouse (with Me as the mouse that roared), I managed to sink that escort with the 2nd fish... the 1st, they deftly evaded. I had that 1 set to slow (which I'm thinking, if only I had set that 1 to high, wouldn't have had to use the 2nd fish... ahhh welll...) ... the 2nd, with close range I set to high & nailed their hide to My conning tower.

So, other than that, no.. I didn't pop off any torp's early on in patrol 2.

M. M.

Every little detail definitely helps... I am still testing here, and coming to no conclusions thus far. Do you happen to know what your fuel level was percentage-wise, and how many torpedoes you had left versus how many your Titan Class can hold? If Mad Mardigan can let us know about his boat also, please... I shot off extra torpedoes at my last target prior to doing a Status Update, and was then below the percentage threshold and was informed "no new assignments available at this time". When I shot torpedoes after getting an assignment, so long as I got a "patrol for x days", I have been able to complete the assignments thus far... I have not figured-out why under certain unknown circumstances, a mission might fail to complete. Now, I have not attempted to stay much more than 2 weeks in a patrol location that fails, but maybe it is tied to the system "clock"?? I dunno. If there was a consistency to this, it would make it a bit easier to track down... - the failures thus far usually happen after liberal use of high TC (trying to speed testing), but it doesn't always fail with high use of TC, and the greatest percentage of missions by far do complete just fine... The 2 failures I have managed to induce thus far, were not the same mission. Both were Patrols, and both were for six days. Still looking.

Hmm... by the time I got into the area of Sibutu, I believe I had like... 75... maybe 90% fuel. As for torp's... upon entering the Sibutu passage patrol zone, had a full complement of fish. by the time I hot footed it back to Surabaya & returned, I was down to I think, 12 fish left.

Of note, I generally don't go more than 256 TC, though every once in a bit.. I may accidently rack up to 512... but as soon as I see that is the case, I tap the - key to drop it down to 256. I try to keep the use of TC down to a lower end range, despite knowing you can rack out 1024 or higher... but, iirc using seriously high TC can make thing go... bonkers. Which I don't want...

That said, with leaving base to make 1st objective, Basilan passage, Sibutu resupply run to base & back, I did use TC during those transits, but limited to 256 at the outside most.

For me, Sibutu Passage has been replete with patrols, but minimal merchant traffic in Jan / Feb 1942. I have encountered one AuxCru, innumerable fishing boats, probably over a dozen patrol craft with 2-4 at a time in the area, ranging from the ineffective, all the way through the "killer" category, with multiple throwers and racks, of which we might try to decrease the throwers so early in the war - but I digress... since editing the H6 radar, the airplanes are not near as persistent as before, so if there is nothing else I've learned from this and the Guadalcanal tests, it's that the airplanes are much more well-behaved for early and mid-war for the next release. The Attu area though, does not have many planes, and I therefore doubt if airplanes play a part. I also saw very little other traffic there. I am wondering about the amount of Save data though. I do remember doing a Save after maybe the sixth Objective, five of which I had done a Status Update to get, and the Save took a while to write. I should have Saved the Save, looking back on it... I don't even know how big it was... I'm going back in for another attempt. Last round failed to fail, and I am on the little laptop...

Edit 1700 Hours: Now I can't get it to break... which is OK also, I suppose... I'll keep trying.
