Immediately noticeable with the new patch is the variability of the new sensors. I went after a convoy last night, took two, escaped and attacked again (this time after dark) and then legged it on the surface to dodge a sub-hunter pack alerted by the first strike.

Throughout both engagements my sensor profile could be seen changing in the size of the 'sensor circles' far more than normal, which allowed me to move around a lot more early on and use speeds I wouldn't normally have against the IRAI warships by keeping my profile slim to the attackers. You have a lot more 'room' in your engagement profile now, it seems to me, but are still required to hunker down when things get tough. This was 90/95 warships and 85/95 merchant difficulty, not sure what the default is anymore!

Good to hear it's working correctly I made a semi-educated guess on the new values based on what I've seen/discovered in the .exe and .act files while digging through them.

Yeah it's definitely there. I really noticed it when clipping the edge of a DD sonar at periscope depth, with a slim angle presented. I could hear his pinging, and he picked me up just as I went out of range - I heard him ping fast for two pings, then I was behind him. Previously, if you were in that sonar cone you were pretty much guaranteed to be picked up - but that time, one or two more seconds and I would've gotten away scot free.

It's not too easy now is it? I'm striving for hard but not extreme. You should have to struggle to evade/keep hidden. It should be a challenge and not feel like oh hum another destroyer, ok, if I do x,y,z he will never detect me. I still want that element of unpredictability/randomness that IRAI is famous far.

Hey TDW, i dont know if this is what happened cause of the patch but, tonight it was 2200 hours and i was sailing 1500M of the right side of a convoy and i stayed there for 40 mins and not once did there Grey circle ever become larger then say 20M. I was able to sail all the way to a ambush point and then, i sailed right into the middle of them and started dropping them with my deck gun.

Oh and the whole time i was on the surface running flank speed. No fog, clear moon lite night. What i found way too easy was the fact that even when i started fireing on them, with my deck gun from 700M they just continued on there course. Never zigged or anything. When i identified them they were AOT/something/something Troop transports. It was some real long name.

Anyways thought i would let you know as you said you wanted a challange but not too hard. Well, this was no challange at all. as i was able to pick off one boat and just turn to the next in line.

Oh and i tried to take pics but, one they were extremly dark and two they didnt show the wakes of the ship, like i tried to take.

using the patch V31
task force including carrier .
june 25 1940 1210 .
Not detected by taskforce while submerged and silent running .
Task force was long range , could make out smoke easily and shape of ships but not details .
Surfaced the boat and head towards the task force at flank .
Task force was long range , could make out smoke easily and shape of ships but not details .
Soon i started recieving shells around the sub exploding .
Submerged and silent running .
Around 4 dds were heading towards my position .
The carrier and a large battleship and large dds were heading away from me in the opposite direction .
Some dds were staying with the carrier .
Some dds were still heading to my position .
ended game here as was just testing .

Can you try that scenario again without the patch installed and see what happens?

Actually I think it is a bit. It's nice that they ease off a little faster, but they're a lot more sluggish/haphazard in the attack now, sometimes not finding me at all. 90/95 warships used to be pretty hard, but I'm getting away with quite a bit now and I shouldn't be. What is the default difficulty (I forget) , or does 100/100 mean insta-detection?

Duci's DDs in SH4 are my benchmark; fast and accurate early on, but you can lose them if you stay low and quiet, and evade the early assault. This feels tons easier, though some of that is probably the extra info in the TAI/map as well.

try this: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=68J64L67

Disable IRAI patch. Place this file in IRAI patch's \data\Cfg letting it overwrite the old one. Reenable patch.

Convoy attack with new patch, The Black Pit campaign. 10 Escort convoy, thick fog & heavy seas.

Hit two ships from the left side of the convoy and that corner's escort at very short range with the rear tube. Left side DDs converge on torp firing position and circle, right side DDs presumably maintain formation (rear to them so no sonar position) as I only get hunted by four or five.

Begin descent to 150m @ silent running (stock 1 knot) after last torp fired. Presented poor, wide angle to approaching DD, took 1 DC to the rear of sub @125m, 10% or so engine damage, manual decrease to .5 knots.

DD swings for second pass and three more escorts begin converging. Several accurate DC runs on the 1st DC position by two escorts while one more listens 1000M or so off. No further damage, escorts make 3 or 4 runs each then return to convoy formation; clean escape with minor damage.

Thoughts:

Definitely better. Assuming the right half of the escort formation stayed formed up (which they probably should), the left half, minus one DD, went right for the torp firing point. I wasn't detected until that first DC pass (thought I'd try stock silent running to see what happened) and while there was no ping at 125m, he nailed me with that first charge at almost exactly the right depth so he must've heard me. The following runs were all at that position and miraculously none went right overhead despite a few close calls and me not moving very far at all, so maybe they still need to be a little more aggressive. I think they used to be better at DCing the area around the last contact, as this time they seemed very focused - in shallow waters this test version would be deadly, in deep not so much as the charges aren't being spread around quite so far.

Do I need to tweak it a little more then?

Do the same thing with this sim file as the last: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3X4FA8N2
