Default Blotchy Sky

I've got an NVIDIA GTX 1060 with 6GB of RAM and I can run the SH4.exe file with everything turned all the way up with most everything looking great except the sky.

Before and after I adjust the video settings the sky looks very blotchy, especially at night without much of transitioning of the lighter and darker shades.

Has anyone figured out a way to fix this?

I remember it was evident a long time ago on older machines, but I would think these relatively newer cards could render a sky better than I'm seeing.

in order to better answer your question, we need to know what version of SH4 you are running, are you using a 4 GB tool, such as Large Address Aware, and what it your SH4 config.

you can get the first by observing the version number when the program loads.
the second is something you would have done manually. there are links in the MODS forum that provide directions.
lastly, the config info can be had very easily by launching JSGME, then Tools, Export to Clipboard, and then paste the results here (ctrl+v)

In addition to KM's sage advice, the hardware isn't as much of an influence as one would think on an old DirectX v9.0c game from 2005. You still have the same limitation today as back then, and today's displays might actually make things look worse, especially if on a larger 4k monitor. Run the game (if possible) at 1920x1080 max, even if you have a 4k monitor, and things will look better, but you will still see "banding", especially in the night sky. Also, do NOT use the "V-Synch" in the game's Options menu. Tick that box clear, so it is NOT enabled. If you are using it, you will see the water smear into what we fondly remember as Jello Water, and the sky will pixelate, like the screen cannot keep up with what the game is outputting... With the nVidia cards, you can use other players' "nip" files for the nVidia Inspector, which can help somewhat with the AA stair-stepping, and slightly improve the graphics...
