Default About Destroyers and Being Detected

In SHIII, with GWX 3.0, when I am lying in wait for a convoy, or sneaking away from a port, I am pinged by destroyers in situations that don't make sense to me.

I am running with silent engaged, 1 meter below periscope depth, at 2 knots (even when at a dead stop waiting for a convoy). Suddenly I get a message, "WE ARE BEING PINGED!" I have the idea that by sneaking like this, the only way for escorts to detect you is by pinging. If they don't know I am there in the first place, why should they ping empty ocean?

Do they see me just below the surface? Can I still be picked up on hydrophones?

I'm in a type IXB in 1939/40. Any help you guys can offer would be awesome.

Unfortunately, this is a falt with the game.
The enemy will start to ping as soon as you present a good active sonar
target, even if they have no way of knowing you are there.

I guess I'll just learn to save more often and deal with it. It is silly of the designers to let something like that slip by.

Thanks for filling me in.

I do not think there's anything wrong with detection in the game. The escorts can hear you even at all stop, from about few hundred meters early, and almost a kilometar late in the war. The maximum active sonar range is a little more than 2 km, and they wont detect you from that distance unless you do something to help them.

The message "we are being pinged" doesn't necessarily mean that you've been detected.

Welcome aboard!

That happens if you are too close to escorts while not being deep enough. Keep some distance (1km if you can) from them when attacking convoys. I usually try to sneak into the middle of the convoy before they get to my position (if i cant i try a long range attack), it also helps when you run away cos they have to manouver between ships giving you lots of time to go deep and away.

If you zoom right in on the navigation map a marker appears around your boat showing both bearings and ranges upto 1500metres. I usually find that if the escorts are within that 1500metre range you're often in trouble, especially if they're there when you're torpedos hit home. You have to give escorts quite a wide berth when hunting a convoy as they seem to listen much harder than if they're alone.

Also make sure that in your rush to get into position you don't stray too close at high speed in tc. This will alert them and they will be on the look out.

Welcome Aboard Herr Kaluen!!

And remember DDs ping because its their job to.

If you ping an empty ocean it may suddenly become full...full of hiding U-boats.

Good Luck!

Normally I use this, when enemy is pinging me:

Run 7 knots to get with fast speed deeper (if possible 120 meters), then I immediately change course and go with 1 knots (silent running) and go (if possible to 200 meters).

I could sneak away from 4 destroyers this way.

There is some very good info on your question in the GWX manual under convoy defenses page B-15. Just go to the root directory of the game under documentation and open the Manual_V3.0

This should give you a good idea of how the enemy searches

Happy hunting and keep your feet dry.
