1624 - An A/C can be seen in the B-Periscope on the stbd. beam on opposite course. The presence of the Escort Group explains the heavy air patrols in this area.

1630 - Task force comes into sight, consists of an Escort Carrier Baiter Class, 12400ts, and two Light Cruisers (Pos.2, Lightweight Class, 5950ts and Pos.3, Arethusa Class, 5240ts and in keel line, and 7 escorts, on course 41°. Closing on task force at S-Tiefe at A.K. and both periscopes up. "Battle Stations!".

1657 - Flooding bow tubes.

1700 - Qu.2488BE bottom right - Spread Shot with tubes I-IV: T-3/Pi39H (MZ); Angle of divergence 1.5°; Running depth 5m; Vt30; Own course 90°; Own speed 6kn ahead; Target ship: Position 1 Escort Carrier Baiter Class 12400ts, draught 6.7m. Target ship is located in Qu.2489BE bottom left.

After the shot, diving to A+50 and rigging for Silent Running. Throughout the entire process, no detection by the escorts, which at times come verily close to the boat.

All torpedoes are misses. Seems like they all passed between the pos.2 and pos.3 Cruisers.

Cmdr.: In hindsight, it would have been better to turn towards the target with angle red90, set the target speed to the max. speed of the vessel (20kn) and set the Angle of divergence to 3°.

1725 - Setting for Reception Depth.

1733 - T=20.

1735 - S-Tiefe. All clear. Breaking off action, diving deeper for torpedo loading. "Dismissed from Battle Stations!".

1742 - At T=50, on course 137°. Commencing torpedo loading.

1809 - Tubes III and IV loaded with AtoFAT/Pi-1(G7H/AZ).

3) To all boats:
a) U 156 (KrvKpt. Werner Hartenstein) last reported on 7 March from EE 45. Several orders to give her position and the situation remained unanswered. On 8 March a U-boat was attacked by an aircraft in EE 91. According to dead reckoning, only U 156 could have been there at the time. She must be presumed lost.
b) U 594 (Kptlt. Friedrich Mumm) was damaged by 2 unexplained explosions at 40 meters while test diving on 28 March. Flotillas have been instructed to ensure better protection against sabotage for ships in the dockyard and to have the boats thoroughly examined before they sail. It is not impossible that sabotage had a hand in boats which were lost through unknown causes.
c) U 648 (Ltnt.z.S.d.R. Peter-Arthur Stahl) transits the K.W.K. to Kiel.
