First War Patrol
(17th war patrol overall)

Sunday, 9 May 1943 - West of Vigo

- continued from 9 May 1943, 1215 -

1657 - Qu.1755CG top right - Diving for FuMB Detection (No Magic Eye) in 210°true, E=13000.

1700 - At T=30, one bomb at the diving position and again at 1701.

1703 - At A-Meter, no sound contact.

1723 - At A-20, Sound contact warship bearing 328°, E=14000, on course NW. Seems to be too far from the position of the last contact at noon, to be the same escort group.

1729 - Reception Depth.

1737 - S-Tiefe. U Class Destroyer bearing 330° on search pattern, E=7500. Anything further cannot be seen due to the high swell and the destroyer is too close to be able to surface.

1741 - Boat turning to course 321°.

1748 - The destroyer runs off at high sped on course West.

1757 - Surfaced after 1h and 3.1nm.
Escort Carrier sighted bearing 323°, on course 323°. Boat changing course to 304° and A.K.

1815 - Qu.1752CG bottom left - Boat is attacked by carrier-based A/C with machine guns and bombs, E=2500. Turing toward the approaching A/C hard to port, which cause the two bombs to overshoot the boat. After the fly-over, "ALARM!".

1817 - At T=25, ejecting one Bold (9 pcs. left), and running off on course 004°.

1818 - At A-Meter no further bombs or damages, but two destroyers are approaching our diving position.

1821 - At E=7000 to destroyers, rigging for Silent Running. The Escort Carrier seems to have reduced its speed, most likely zig-zagging.

1832 - The two destroyers run off from our diving position, in direction toward the Escort Carrier. As before, one very fast and the other at medium speed.

1842 - At Reception Depth. Secured from Silent Running.

1845 - S-Tiefe. A G&H Destroyer bearing 225°, E=6500, still on search pattern.

1855 - In the B-Periscope a carrier based A/C is seen on our stbd. beam, approaching from NNE, on opposite course, and dropping two bombs in the area of our last diving position, 4250m astern.

1910 - At E=10000, the Destroyer is out of sight (a faint smoke trail can still be seen in the B-Periscope).

1915 - Surfaced after 1h and 3.1nm.

1918 - Qu.1752CG top left - Right after the boat is ventilated and the Compressed Air Supply is filled, the boat is attacked by an Avenger A/C with Machine Guns, bombs and RP-3 Rockets, direct approach from West. Again, turned toward the approaching A/C with A.K., which cause the bombs and rockets to overshoot the boat. Right after the fly-over, "ALARM!".

1921 - At A-Meter, rigged for Silent Running and ran-off on course 0°.

1930 - As the two destroyers about 13000m away are not approaching, secured from silent running.

1940 - A-20.

2015 - After the watch change, set for Reception Depth.

2028 - Surfaced from S-Tiefe after 1h 10min. and 3.1nm.

2033 - Boat ventilated. On course 65°.

2037 - Compressed Air Supply filled.

2040 - Charging batteries (80%): Stbd.Diesel, Charging/496RPM; Port.-Diesel, Propulsion/285RPM/8kn. FuMB-Detection in 250°true, E=14500 (No Magic Eye). Boat stays surfaced.

2108 - Sundown. Weather and Sea unchanged in 38h.

2220 - Batteries charged: 1h 40min. for 20%.

First War Patrol
(17th war patrol overall)

Sunday, 9 May 1943 - West of Vigo

- continued from 9 May 1943, 2220 -

2233 - Outgoing F.T.: To B.d.U.:
9.5., 0920, Qu.1577CG, Escort Group with Escort Carrier and three Destroyers and again at 1700 in Qu.1755CG, both on course NW, 18kn. Both times not able to attack due to attack of carrier based airplane and high swell at day time. No damages. Suspect two different escort groups. Switching to Circuit Amerika-I. 497cbm. 15 eels. ENE5/4, clear, visibility 7.5nm, >1000mb. - RST -

2304 - Incoming F.T.'s:
From O.K.W.:
a) The German occupation government in the Netherlands declared martial law.
b) The "San Marco" Italian naval infantry regiment surrendered at Bizerte, Tunisia.
From O.K.M.:
a) In order to make it possible for the boats to guide in other boats when they themselves have sighted a convoy even when there are major differences in fixes, a shadower's signal buoy has been constructed and two boats (U 358 and U 381) have been equipped with one to try out. The buoy is to be fired as a star or rocket in the same way as the former signal rocket with axial staff, and will be distinguishable by very obvious characteristics from star signals and illuminant rockets, as the enemy often uses these to lead our boats astray. If these buoys are satisfactory, it is intended to use them operationally.
From B.d.U.:
a) U 666 Oblt. Herbert Engel) brought down a "Halifax" (misidentified as a Sunderland) with 6 shots at 1028 in the Bay of Biscay, Qu. BE 6888. The Halifax only strafed the boat on its first attack and received AA hits in one of the port engines during a second run. The pilot then apparently lost control when turning to come in again and the Halifax crashed into the sea about 500m (546 yds) from the boat, killing the crew of eight.
b) U 648 (Oblt.d.R. Peter Arthur Stahl), 168, 381 and 226 refueled from U 459 (KrvKpt. Georg von Wilamowitz-Möllendorf).
c) U 663 (KrvKpt. Heinrich Schmid) was not found and so far, has not reported. According to dead reckoning she must enter port at the latest on 12.5.
d) U 531 and 438 were probably caught unawares and sunk in the thick fog while operating on convoy No.36, U 438 was probably lost after a daylight attack. U 630 and U 192 (Oblt. Werner Happe) did not report at all after attacking the convoy. Last message from U 630 was dated 21.4. as she left the supply boat in BD 25. U 192 last radioed on 3.5. from AJ 3757 (Convoy No. 33). Both these boats may therefore have been lost earlier.
5 boats must be considered lost.

2303 – Incoming Radio Reports:
From O.K.W.:
a) Japanese troops crossed the Yangtze River near Baiyang, Hunan Province, China and attacked Chinese positions on the opposite shore.
b) 105 survivors of the "San Marco" Italian Naval Infantry Regiment, were evacuated from La Galite Island by motored torpedo boats.
From B.d.U.:
a) U 178 (IXD2; KrvKpt. Wilhelm Dommes) has been allocated KY 60, 90 and KZ 40 and 70 as attack area. Focal point off Port Elizabeth.
b) U 528 (Oblt. Georg von Rabenau) did not report, despite repeated challenges. U 558 (Kptlt. Günther Krech), who had been detailed to render assistance; heard about 40 detonations (bombs) between 1220 and 1330 on 11.5. It must be assumed that U 528 was attacked a second time by planes and destroyed. Loss is probable.
B-Dienst-Report:
a) Just 17 months after the first conceptual meeting for an acoustic homing torpedo, the Mark 24 FIDO aerial torpedo had its first operational victory when a Liberator bomber of RAF Coastal Command’s 86 Squadron caught German submarine U-456 (Kptlt. Max-Martin Teichert) on the surface in the mid-Atlantic, while operating on convoy HX.237. As the submarine dove, the bomber dropped one Mark 24 torpedo that guided itself to the submerged submarine and exploded, causing major damage. Later that same day when U-456 was forced to dive deep to avoid a depth charge attack by destroyer HMS Opportune, the previous damage proved too great and the submarine sank with all 49 hands.
b) An enemy submarine situation report received on 11.5. gave several of our patrols or supply groups in the North Atlantic, and it is becoming increasingly clear, that the enemy has excellent radar gear capable of picking up the submarines without their knowing it. In the case of these known dispositions not enough radio messages were sent to provide the enemy with sufficient material for his deductions.
c) Auxiliary Aircraft Carrier USS Card (CVE-11) arrived in New York Harbor, anchoring off Tompkinsville, Staten Island.

Boat remains surfaced.

Boat sustained 2% hull damage; total of 4% for this patrol (230m x 96% => 220.8m)

0353 - Qu.7655CF -

0700 - Early Morning Dawn.

0810 - Sunrise. Weather and Sea unchanged in 1 day and 10h.

1036 - Incoming F.T.1030/14/5: From B.d.U.:
B-Dienst reports enemy convoy in Qu.1287DH, on course NNE, speed 6kn.

Cmdr.: As suspected, the strong enemy air patrol indicated that there must be a convoy or other high value shipping passing through this area.

1045 - Boat is operating on the convoy. Course 139°, 2xH.F.
Estimated contact with convoy at 1730 in Qu.1229DH.

487cbm (2cbm in 24h); Course 140°; Battery 96%; Bold 9 each; Weather and Sea unchanged in 1 day and 14h.
Note: Possible salvo shots with 3 torpedoes are: I-II-III and II-III-IV.

1608 - Qu.7989DH center left - "ALARM!" for Sunderland in 115°true, on course WNW, E=10500.

1611 - At A-Meter no bombs.

1618 - Course 90°, 1/3-Ahead.

1637 - At Reception Depth.

1643 - Surfaced after 35min. and 2.0nm.

1644 - Sunderland can be seen flying off in 35°true, on course ESE, E=6000. Boat remains surfaced.

1646 - Boat ventilated and Compressed Air Supply filled.

1651 - Course 115°, 1/3-Ahead.

1834 - Qu.1226DH - FuMB-Detection twice in relative bearing 118° (no Magic Eye).

1837 - (Battle Class) Destroyer bearing 57°, E=14000, on course 31°, slow speed.

Cmdr.: After diving for the Sunderland, we almost missed the contact point with the convoy but found it now as calculated. Historically, Battle Class destroyers didn't see any action in WWII.

1845 - Boat is positioned toward the front of the port side of the convoy, which slowly comes into sight. Going on parallel course 31°. Convoy speed is determined as 6-7kn.

1855 - Outgoing F.T.: To B.d.U.:
"Gustav Gelb!" Sighted convoy 1030/14/5 in Qu.1229DH top right, course 31°, speed 6.5kn. Keeping contact with Battle Class Destroyer. S7/6, medium heavy swell, clear, visibility 7.5nm, >1000mb. - RST -

1858 - Incoming F.T.: From B.d.U.:
RST: Assume attack position and keep contact with convoy. Await further orders but if situation allows you are free to attack.

Shortly after sending the F.T., the (Battle Class) Destroyer goes on a search pattern and a second escort comes into sight. Boat has to keep distance to escorts by changing speed and course, E=11100.

2148 - A Sunderland crosses our stern at a distance of 6400m on course WNW, goes out of sight at E=12000.

All the while, the (Battle Class) Destroyer must smell that something is up, because she continuously goes on search patterns, while the other escort stoically stays its course.

Cmdr.: I decide to dive for a submerged attack while it is still dusk and before the Sunderland comes back around.

- to be continued -

1045 - Boat is operating on the convoy. Course 139°, 2xH.F.
Estimated contact with convoy at 1730 in Qu.1229DH.

1200 - Qu.7917CF - Days Run: 189.0nm - ↗ 187.1nm (23h 20') - ↘ 1.9nm (40')
Total: 1847.6nm (9tg 22h) - ↗ 1779.1nm (8tg 21h 25') - ↘ 68.5nm (1tg 00h 35')

- continued from 14 May, 2148 -

2200 - Qu.8748CF - Diving for submerged attack, at E=11000, T=18.

2205 - Course 121°, which will be the attack course.

2211 - Sundown.

2222 - At E=4000 to Destroyer, rigging for Silent Running.

According to the sound contact, the storm must have divided the convoy into two parts, a faster section of 10 steamers in front and a slower section of 11 steamers behind. All in all, 9 escorts are heard.

2245 - The boat passes in between the forward port leading escort and the forward port side escort. No ASDIC is heard. Secured from Silent Running, 1/3-Ahead.

2258 - S-Tiefe. "Battle Stations!"

2301 - Qu.8749CF - Submerged Spread Shot with tubes I-II: T-3/Pi39H (MZ); Angle of divergence 1.5°; Running depth 4m; Vt30; Own course 121°; Own speed 4kn ahead; Target ship: Row Carrier 5761ts, draught 5.8m.

Both torpedoes are hits, No.1 midships, No.2 in the aft section!

The steamer explodes in a huge fireball which can be heard and felt in the whole boat, and sinks burning over its entire length within 2 minutes. Must have been loaded with some very hazardous cargo.

We have to withdraw backwards as to not endanger the boat from the explosions and also, not to get rammed by a HogIsland Freighter, that is evading the torpedoed Row Carrier towards our position.

2306 - Qu.8749CF - Submerged Single Shot with tube IV: T-3/Pi39H (MZ); Running depth 4m; Vt30; Own course 121°; Own speed 5kn ahead; Target ship: Liberty Cargo 5681ts, draught 5.8m.
Target course 31°; Target distance 1500m; Target angle red90°; Target speed 10kn; Firing angle α 314°.

2306 - Qu.8749CF - Submerged Single Shot with tube III: AtoFat/PiG7H (AZ); Running depth 4m; Vt30; FAT-Settings: Straight Run 2000m - Giro Angle red90° - Giro Run 1600m; Own course 121°; Own speed 5kn ahead; Target ship: Liberty Cargo 5681ts, draught 5.8m.
Target course 31°; Target distance 1500m; Target angle red90°; Target speed 10kn; Firing angle α 304°.
Weather/Sea: S7/6, medium heavy swell, clear, visibility 6.5nm, >1000mb.
Shooter: KvtKpt. & Cmdr. RST.

Right after the shot, turning boat hard to stbd., to bring the T-4 to bear.

2309 - Flooding tube VI. The AtoFat (Tube III) is a hit but fails to detonate - suspect too sharp of an angle for the contact fuse.

2311 - Qu.8749CF - Submerged Single Shot with tube VI: T-4 "Falke"/Pi39H (MZ); Running depth 4m; Vt20; Own course 175°; Own speed 3kn ahead; Target ship: Liberty Cargo 5681ts, draught 5.8m.
Target course 31°; Target distance 1500m; Target angle red160°; Target speed 10kn; Firing angle α 138°.
Weather/Sea: S7/6, medium heavy swell, clear, visibility 6.5nm, >1000mb.
Shooter: KvtKpt. & Cmdr. RST.

2312 - Tube IV (T-3), that was a miss on the Liberty Cargo, is a hit on another unidentified vessel, after 6 min., so, almost at the end of its run time.

2317 - Sound Operator reports sinking sounds from the direction of the tube III torpedo impact.

2319 - The T-4 "Falke" is a hit after 8 min. Assuming hit on the Liberty Cargo.

A Black Swan Sloop and a C&D Destroyer are circling around our shooting position.

2325 - Flooding tube V.

2326 - Qu.8749CF - Submerged Single Shot with tube V: EtoFat/Pi39H (MZ); Running depth 4m; Vt30; FAT-Settings: Straight Run 2000m - Giro Angle green90° - Giro Run 1600m; Own course 210°; Own speed 3kn ahead; Target ship: Black Swan Frigate 1250ts, draught 3.7m.
Target course 265°; Target distance 1500m; Target angle red80°; Target speed 10kn; Firing angle α 284°.
Weather/Sea: S7/6, medium heavy swell, clear, visibility 6.5nm, >1000mb.
Shooter: KvtKpt. & Cmdr. RST.

After the shot, the Sloop is turning away on a northerly heading, while the C&D-Destroyer is shooting star shells and searching for survivors.

The EtoFat is a miss after the end of the run.

2330 - "Dismissed from Battle Stations!".

A Diana Typ Steamer 2600ts, loaded with tanks on the upper deck, is passing our port beam on course 31°, slow speed.
