I finally decided to get a cell phone about 8 months ago. Technically my first one (what can I say, I never really needed one, still not entirely convinced I do now).

Anyhow its a cheap little Alcatel OT-908.

Generally speaking it has been a pretty good little phone, but the lack of memory and some bloatware it came with were a problem until recently. I decided to finally get the cell phone unlocked (gonna need it in the US), and I also rooted it, which has solved my memory problems (got rid of all the bloatware and outdated programs, and moved most of my apps over to sd card on an ext2 partition using Link2SD).

Currently I use a Blackberry Torch 9860 paid for by our company and free to use as we see fit.

I was asking an Android phone, but my boss limited the choice for the department to iPhone and Blackberry.

It's the simplicity of it, and the ease of use, that got me. I was a long time skeptic when it came to tablets but I got an Ipad at Christmas and fell in love with it. I use it for everything I can now. Take it with me when I go away, use it for reading PDF's, use it for surfing the net, watching TV, listening to music, all the stuff I use my laptop for except it's so much more convenient. recently, I've started using it as a 'Sketchpad' for music production with a couple of apps. One of them allows me to export whatever music I've been messing around with as a WAV via Itunes and I can drop it straight into whatever DJ set I'm currently messing around with or planning.

I think tablets will probably kill laptop sales over the next five years or so. I love my laptop, but with the exception of word processing I can't really think of a single thing I do with it that I couldn't now do on my tablet. Well, games, I guess, but it's only a matter of time before they become powerful enough to run a good portion of the titles on the market.

Lol, well, I'm one of those people who likes to keep his monitor free of fingerprints and smearing...I'm always stopping people when they are looking at something with me and they feel the need to touch the screen, instead of pointing with a safe 3" distance between their grubby fingers and my sacred monitor.

Only problems with it are the aforementioned bloatware and the fact it can be fairly capricious about sending Emails. Aside from that, it's a great handset and almost as good as my old iPhone was.
Just ditched my iphone for a Defy+.

Better reception, better call quality, better control.

I'm liking the change.

Writing? How well does word processing work without a proper keyboard?

The poster you were responding to I believe did say "with the exception of word processing".

But there are plenty of keyboard docks/bluetooth keyboards that you can hook up to a tablet, and obviously the hardware is perfectly capable of word processing.

The end of the PC workstation as we know it for the non-specialized worker/consumer is coming!

My latest is the IPhone 4s.
Pros.
Looks great
Easy to use
Has a great 8meg camera
Cons.
You have to pay for most apps
Battery only lasts around a day if you are lucky.

Other than that I really love my iPhone.

Got myself a Sony-Ericsson xperia Arc S a couple of days ago, compared to my X8 this thing is awesome. Well built, powerful enough for my use while not costing an arm and a leg.
That said, I would probably still recommend a Samsung Galaxy S2 over it in the same price range, but they were out of stock on those here.

Default Android vs Iphone.

Not being a snot, but my wife got the new I phone. After the contract and accessories it costs 600$ (and a little more)
It does less than my 200$ android phone. Which is mid range.

What is the allure, that makes people wait on line overnite for this crap?

I pay 35$ a month. With no 2 year contract.

Is it some kind of social status thing?

I do not get it, and I am not an apple trasher, but I am not impressed. 600 for what my 200$ phone does faster. with no contract.

I hope no one here is as stupid as we were...I am warning you now, it is pure crap for the price paid.

I don't get it either.

I paid €120 for my sony-ericson, no problems after 8 months. Only the SD card is a bit small, only 2gb and I'm to lasy to go buy a new one.

It's not why people buy Iphones. I'd buy an Iphone.
But paying more for a phone than I did for my car, that's just crazy.

I just get an evil grinn when i read up on Apples mistakes
The same kind I get when I see a broken down Audi or BMW

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with technology...both my kids have Iphones but I stick with my old reliable Blackberry.

From what I can gather it is an integration thing. You can connect different Apple products easely without any problems. My boss has an Android phone but is considering an Apple iPhone due to this.
