Ukraine's military says it has broken through Russia's first line of defence in the occupied Kherson region.

The reported push appears to form part of a long-awaited counter-offensive being launched by Kyiv in an attempt to retake the country's south.

It follows weeks of Ukrainian attacks aimed at cutting off Russian forces there from main supply routes.

Russia's military claims that Ukrainian troops suffered "heavy losses" during an unsuccessful attacking attempt.

The claims by both Ukraine and Russia have not been independently verified.

Russia Is Sending A Fresh Army Corps To Ukraine. Its Troops Are ‘Unfit And Old.’

Photos that appeared online over the weekend, depicting Russian army armored vehicles on trains rolling out of the army training base Mulino, 200 miles east of Moscow, are a potentially ominous sign.

The Russian army’s newest grouping, the 3rd Army Corps, is on the move–toward eastern Ukraine. The 3rd Army Corps is the first big new formation to take shape as a result of the Kremlin’s urgent initiative, beginning this summer, to recruit new soldiers and stand up new units in order to make good the tens of thousands of troops it has lost in the six months since it widened its war in Ukraine.

The 3rd AC will, to some extent, boost the fighting strength of the battered Russian army in Ukraine. But it’s unclear just how effective the corps might be in combat with battle-hardened Ukrainian battalions. While the 3rd AC has drawn relatively modern equipment, its recruits–middle-age men, mostly–are indicative of the Russian army’s broader manpower challenge.

Aging Russia doesn’t have a lot of highly-motivated, fit young men to spare. And that means the 3rd AC could roll into battle at a disadvantage.

The Russian army that attacked northern, eastern and southern Ukraine on Feb. 23 included around 125 battalion tactical groups in 10 army groups, altogether overseeing around 125,000 front-line troops. That was 80 percent of the Kremlin’s ground combat power.

That army has suffered heavy casualties totaling as many as 80,000 killed and wounded, according to a recent U.S. Defense Department assessment. That’s twice as many casualties as the Ukrainian army probably has suffered.

The steep losses help to explain why the Russian operation has winnowed. In February, Moscow’s goal was to destroy the Ukrainian armed forces, capture all major Ukrainian cities east of the Dnipro River, occupy Kyiv, topple the Ukrainian government and also capture the entirety of Ukraine’s Black Sea coast including the strategic port of Odesa.

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine may be outgunned but in the latest sign it is not yet outfoxed, a fleet of decoys resembling advanced U.S. rocket systems has tricked Russian forces into wasting expensive long-range cruise missiles on dummy targets, according to interviews with senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials and photographs of the replicas reviewed by The Washington Post. The Ukrainian decoys are made out of wood but can be indistinguishable from an artillery battery through the lens of Russian drones, which transmit their locations to naval cruise missile carriers in the Black Sea. “When the UAVs see the battery, it’s like a VIP target,” said a senior Ukrainian official, referring to unmanned aerial vehicles encountering long-range artillery replicas.

But that fleet and its accompanying air wing have been battered by innovative Ukrainian missile and drone attacks, turning the once-feared force into something of an afterthought in Europe’s largest war in seven decades. Security assistance to Ukraine should continue and increase - Zelensky to U.S. Senators Portman and Klobuchar

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a meeting in Kiev with U.S. Senators Robert Portman and Amy Klobuchar said that U.S. security assistance to Ukraine must continue and increase.

"I welcome U.S. Senators Robert Portman and Amy Klobuchar to Ukraine! The bipartisan and bicameral support of Congress is very valuable for us. We discussed in detail the development of the situation on the front. Grateful to the United States for the help! It must continue and increase. Only AFU reports on military actions, their course, consequences and results - General Staff addressed to journalists

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has once again appealed to bloggers and media representatives with a request not to assess the actions of the Ukrainian military.

The message notes: "Understanding the high level of public inquiry, we consider it necessary once again to appeal to everyone who consciously associates its work with information, positions its activities as public, has a large audience and enjoys its trust:

- we urge everyone and everyone to refrain from speculation and not to make assessments about the actions of the AFU and the Ukrainian Defense Forces as a whole;

- We recall that only the military leadership has full information about the situation on the front lines, so it is military officials who can provide this information;

- We emphasize the inadmissibility of double interpretation of the strategic and operational situation at the front of the Russian-Ukrainian war, juggling military terminology, and attempts to produce one's own unsubstantiated forecasts.

It is also unacceptable to cut out of context statements by individuals, including official ones, to give these statements different connotations and interpret them at one's own discretion.

The main rule is that the Armed Forces of Ukraine report on military actions, their course, consequences and results!

Our brave soldiers are doing their job masterfully and are destroying the occupiers all along the front line every day.
So let us continue to have faith in the Ukrainian Army, not to question the actions of the commanders and not to serve as an additional tool in the hands of Russian propaganda. The enemy is insidious and ruthless, and he will try to use any advantage, including information advantage, to damage us.

Getting enough young fit people to volunteer to fight in a war is largely a matter of motivation. It's a lot easier to find recruits when your country is being attacked than when your country is embarked upon a war of conquest with it's neighbors.
