that's the one; I left it for U as you'd gone down the dolphin path ahead of me, and I'm so old that I'm garnering treasure for heaven by not pre-empting, larceny or purloining someone else's research efforts in this thread.

I had read of this critter in the paper not long ago but I've never dived in the Gulf of California.

That's the one but you may be overstating the numbers, my source reckons perhaps only a dozen or so.

The vaquita is an extremely rare dolphin species on the brink of extinction, with an estimated 12 living in the Gulf of California. Females are the larger of the two sexes, and grow to around 1.4 meters – making our list of the world’s smallest animals.

The biggest threat to vaquitas is from the fishing of totoaba, which uses gillnets vaquitas can get tangled in an unable to reach the surface to breathe. In 2016 gillnets were banned in the vaquita’s habitat, but illegal gillnet fishing continues, as does the incidental killing of the handful of vaquitas left in the wild.

Thanks Jim, i know a bit about dolphins but this one was new to me.

We should have started a survival program for the Vaquita porpoise, i saw there are now 10 left in 2022, if at all

There are also very small dolphins in the North sea and the baltic, called "Schweinswal" or "Tuemmler" (Phocoena phocoena), they were abundant only ten years ago, now they also are an endangered species. Chemicals, pesticides, dying in fishing nets, not enough food due to excessive fishing, submarine sonar and so on.
The "Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung" has chosen the Tuemmler as "Animal of the year 2022"; but most probably too little, too late.
