Sub Skipper's Bag of Tricks--Techniques, tactics, tutorials, videos
Discussion on this topic begins here. Well, we're giving the old WernerSobe thread the old heave ho and starting a new tactics thread. Of course we're still going to feature all of Werner's great work and maybe repost some of his best stuff here. All links will be preserved, and since they will lead to Werner's thread, all that great material will continue to help all the great skippers at SUBSIM. This first post will contain all the tactics links I can cobble up. If anyone else has some that were left out PM me and we'll get them included. Here we go with Sub Skipper's Bag of Tricks, Mark I: US Navy Links: The Fleet Type Submarine Online The Submarine Commander's Handbook The Submarine Torpedo Fire Control Manual Torpedo Data Computer, Mark III WernerSobe links: link fixed 6/23/15 link fixed 6/23/15 link fixed 6/23/15 Aaronblood's Links: MoBo: Electronic Maneuvering Board and Dead Reckoning Tracker Rockin Robbins' links: .......brand new video 8/14/2015!!!! Edit: 8/14/09 And a very important and useful part of Subsim history: Edit: 10/22/09 From the guy who started it all, gutted: Solution Solver 1.3 The sound you hear is me munching on my words "I believe in attack methods using only in-game tools: no external calculators, no alt-tabbing out of the game for external software, nothing that would damage your immersion into the submarine." YUM! This tool is so useful that it cannot be ignored. You'll be glad to kill the immersion a little and astounded at the sophistication and ease of use of this software torpedo fire control tool. Edit: 12/15/09 Ducimus link: SH3 & SH4 "Uber" AI Explained This is a detailed explanation of how escort sonar works and how to handle your submarine to give you maximum advantage. It also explains how the enemy AI works so your strategy can actually work FOR you instead of being counterproductive. This work is of vital importance to any player of SH3 or SH4 especially if running Brand X in 3 or TMO in 4. Whew! What a collection! Do we have enough yet? NO! But I'm just trying to get everyone I've promised inclusion in this thread together in the same place. Enjoy! SH4 Video Thread Formerly a sticky topic, here is the link. Tips by journalist Andy Mahood
How do you take the pictures? Pull up the periscope screen (don't just hit the F4 key but click the periscope station twice to display all the scope related buttons) and you'll see a "photograph" button on the far right. You have to lock the target with the 'L' key to activate it. Does it eventually consider the mission "complete" after you patrol for 24 hours in the area? Nope. I have no idea what triggers complete on a sink cargo ships mission. If it's actually sinking cargo ships, then I guess the mission was completely impossible. Try patroling the area for 48 hours. That was the trick in one of my first missions. 24 hours wasn't enough. |

Thanks, and I'd suggest changing the blue text on dark metal to yellow, pink, light green, or even light blue or whatever else anything easier on eyes.

No, I have seen use of that blue by some people before and it was hard to see because the background is dark so less contrast to bg color and the front.. If it's only me, I should correct my monitor setting (I think my eyes are ok) but I assume my monitor setting is not far off from majority and with that, that blue is not easy to see.
Not a big problem. Thanks for changing it , here, the conversation stopper exits |

The "SH4 attack Brighter" video is in DivX format, you may need to reinstall the divx codec or reset it's settings to default.

Thanks for the videos. Unfortunately my question didn't get answered by these - I'm not using manual TDC (and didn't in SH3).
First issue is that when I sight a ship, in SH3 it displayed a graphic of the ship with its depth etc, it was then easy to go F6 into my attack screen and set up each torpedo depth-wise, then open all the bow-caps in preperation. In SH4 I do not get the diagram, I can't set the torp depths as easily, and I can only open one bow-cap at a time. Second, I had 2 ships, one following the other. My torp depths for tube 1 and tube 2 were set differently. I sighted the first ship, locked with "L" and fired. I sighed the second ship, locked with "L" and fired. BOTH torpedoes hit the same ship!!!! WHY? In SH3 I'd have got clean hits on both ships, so why did 2 torps go for the same target when I sighed 2 different targets? Dave |

Can I ask a blanket request to the authors of the contributors of this thread, if I may have permission to include your contributions (including text, imagery and screenshots) for the SH4 Manual I am working on?
More Info here http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=110945 It would be greatly appreciated. All contributors to this manual will be credited. Thank you very much!
