Ship Losses: Alaska (United States) The passenger ship ran aground on Blunts Reef, 40 nautical miles (74 km) south of Eureka, California, and sank with the loss of 48, or 31 passengers and 11 crew, of the 214 people on board. Some of the survivors were rescued by Anyox ( United Kingdom).

Ship Losses: Calimeris (Greece) The cargo ship suffered an onboard explosion in her cargo and sank in the Mediterranean Sea. Her crew were rescued by Falka ( Sweden). Golden Gate (United States) The barque ran aground on a reef 31 nautical miles (57 km) east of Point Manzanillo, Panama.[138] She was refloated on 15 August.

Ship Losses: Celia Cohen (United Kingdom) The schooner caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean 60 nautical miles (110 km) off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and was abandoned. Her crew were rescued by West Keene ( United States). Lady of Gaspe (United Kingdom) The passenger ship ran aground at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was declared a total loss on 19 August.

Italian pilot Giovanni De Briganti piloting a Macchi M.7 wins the Schneider Trophy, the race for seaplanes and flying boats. While on holiday at Lubec, Maine, future U.S. president (and recent U.S. vice presidential nominee in the 1920 election) Franklin D. Roosevelt suffered the first signs of paralysis from poliomyelitis. The disease was misdiagnosed by a local doctor as resulting a bad cold.

Members of the American Legion visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris at the Arc de Triomphe. Ship Losses: St Clair (France) The cargo ship caught fire at Mex, Egypt and was beached. She was a total loss.

Ship Losses: Albatross (Germany) The sailing ship collided with Garm ( Sweden) at Holtenau and sank. She was refloated on 16 August. Bethlehem (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground at Little Bras d'Or, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was refloated on 18 August. Planet (United Kingdom) The lightship was rammed and sunk in Liverpool Bay by Greenbrier ( United Kingdom). All six crew were rescued. She was refloated and beached on 19 August.

Passenger liner SS King Orry runs aground at New Brighton, England, necessitating the rescue of its 1300 passengers. Ship Losses: Canadian Recruit (Canada) The collier collided with Maskinonge ( United Kingdom) in the Saint Lawrence River and sank. King Orry (Isle of Man) The passenger ferry ran aground at New Brighton, Cheshire, United Kingdom. Over 1,300 people were rescued. King Orry was refloated later that day.
