Default 1/350 Type VII C U-boat U-552 “Rote Teufel”

Finished my first seascape a few months back. Extremely pleased with how it turned out. U-552 aka “Rote Teufel” (Red Devil), Type VII C U-boat captained by Erich Topp. Model is 1/350 scale.

I used a backed wood frame and styrofoam for the base. Covered the styrofoam with bunches of aluminum foil to form waves and then glued an aluminum foil sheet over the “waves” that I created. Then used layers of Modge Podge matte to give a coat of transparent glue over the foil to take primer. Primed using a grey Tamiya primer and then applied a variety of sea blue and other colors to build up the seascape. I sealed everything with gloss coats and added more layers of gloss Modge Podge. I used a gel medium for the waves. The foam and turned up sea was replicated using pulled apart cotton balls and covering with Modge Podge gloss.

Onto the next one! Glad to see other modelers and sub simmers out there! ☺️👌

Great job, I would be proud.

The seascape model is on my list of models to try to make. I've watched a lot of videos, some use wet wipes, others some other stuff. Was the foil easy to work with? And how does it hold up once you have finished everything, is it durable?

Thanks Onkel! Yeah, I would say that the foil was easy to work with. I used regular Elmer’s glue to fix the foil to the styrofoam. Then did diluted glue all over before putting on the top sheet of foil. It had a pretty long drying time but once I put a sheet over it and then a few other layers of glue and primer it was pretty rock solid after dried. Once the base was dried and hard I put the sub into position and then worked around it to fill the gaps, work on waves, and the foam. Hope that all makes sense! I’ll definitely use this technique again.

Yeah, that sounds good, I really like your results. I will definitely try that approach when I start on a sea diorama. I'm thinking of making another Ohio class like my first on, except this time it will be submerged and the missile will be breaking the surface...

Default Inspiring

I came to this site for some mods, but I must say, it is this U-boot model building section I keep coming back to.

@Ugly_american; what you made is inspiring, so very cool that I want to try
this myself. It is truly amazing looking.

Very impressed by this
