I'm not sure. The merchant ships need to be modified to have sub-components like real internal cargo, destructible bow/stern, boilers, and so on (see the mostly scratch-built ship below, which I posted earlier). I will need to investigate how feasible it is to modify stock SH4 ships in this way.

BTW, slapped a coat o' paint on some models from earlier, plus details. Two sisters enjoying the sunset early in the war. The white bands on stacks helped tell sister ships apart - by 1916, these were probably painted out. Also, the 6" guns were useless in heavy seas, so by 1916 they were placed on the main deck in a much better position.

Still incomplete, but IMO better than the old model, which was destroyed in the malware attack.

Very beauty ships. This are Scharnhorst and Gneisenau?

I Hope, we can Save them of own destruction on the falklands.

No. Those are Black Prince and Duke of Edinburgh... British not German ships. By the way I will be posting screenshots of WOTKs antialiasing enhancements after work. So look out for more updates here and on Facebook by tomorrow.

Thank you for the link, Niume.

Here is Wolves of the Kaiser running with the FXAA enhancement. It was originally developed for The Elder Scrolls series, but I found that it works very well with Silent Hunter. Below are various submarines and particle effects with the enhancement running. It looks better than the screenshots capture; I find the screenshots are a little bit too dark.

Default Best WW1 Uboat?

Awesome progress guys, always amazed whenever I come back to check how the mod is going.

A question of curiosity ~ How would you list the best WW1 Uboats?

They all seem pretty good, which would be the best 3?
Because I would most likely not know which one to pick

If I recall correctly, the most successful WW1 U-boat type was the U-31 type. There were only 11 boats of this type made, but they accounted for 1,865,139 tons of enemy shipping. The three highest-scoring aces commanded these boats: de la Perière (U 35), Forstmann (U 39), Valentiner (U 38). Not sure which of the other types were next most successful - maybe the coastal UBII type, which were made in larger numbers and commanders like Otto Steinbrinck and Karl Neumann did well on them. Then maybe come the U-63 and U-51 types, made in very small numbers, but very successful under commanders like Hans Rose (U 53) and Otto Schultze (u 63). As for individual U-boats, there's a list here: http://www.uboat.net/wwi/boats/most_successful.html

Beery is right; the U-31 Class was extremely successful. However, my opinion is that they were mostly successful because of where and when they were deployed. It just happened that the U-31 Class was frequently deployed to the Mediterranean, where defences were weaker than around the British Isles. U-31 class boats U-35, U-34, and U-38 racked up huge kill totals there - in all likelihood, if they had been stationed in the channel for instance they would not have sunk as much tonnage.

Also, the U-31 Class was fortunate enough to be in service in 1914-1915, when Allied antisubmarine techniques (convoys, depth charge attacks, widespread sonar, good mines, etc) were not available.

On paper, the U-31 Class was a decent but not great design as built. It suffered from several problems:

-Germaniawerft diesels (very unreliable,& inferior to the MAN diesels - on paper top speed was 16.4 kts; in practice it was about 11 kts early
in the war. Lots of breakdowns and aborted patrols.)

-Low torpedo loadout (only 6 torpedoes)

-Not enough torpedo tubes (2 bow and 2 stern tubes; not really enough for attacking a convoy or task force). Although adequate for single merchantmen early in the war.

To their credit, by the end of the war the U-31 boats were much improved - reaching design speed with improved Germaniawerft diesels and carrying from 9-10 torpedoes due to improved stowage.

I'd say the top 3 oceangoing boat types were:

U-66 class (12 torpedoes, 4 bow & 1 stern tubes gave a good salvo)

U-87 class (12-16 torpedoes, 4 bow & 2 stern tubes; 105mm gun well-supplied with rounds)

U-93 class (12-16 torpedoes, 4 bow & 2 stern tubes; 105mm gun as built; better top speed than U-87 class at about 17kts.)

Generally, these boats performed worse than the U-31 class simply because they served in more dangerous waters, and were built at the same time the Allies were improving ASW tech.

In terms of cruiser subs, the U-139 class were far better than the U-151 class - they had armor, up to 24 torpedoes, 6 torpedo tubes, more reliable diesels, comfortable crew quarters, and better seakeeping.

WOW!!! these teasers are killing me; I want this mod.
But one question, are you going to create an 88mm deck gun for the playable subs?
