Default DVD playing issue

I was just curious if anyone has ever run into this issue before and solved it.

The color on my monitor is fine and beautiful for everything. The problem comes when I go to play a DVD movie or a movie ripped from a DVD. The first problem that occured was I couldn't see the DVD video at all and there were just wierd rainbow colored shadows and shapes floating around and the audio would come in fine. This occured wether I played a DVD in my DVD drive OR when I played a movie ripped from a DVD from my hard drive.

Then the problem seemed to go away by itself but was replaced by another problem. Now, I see the video on the screen, but the colors are all washed out like someone put a blue filter over the lens of the camera and the video quality is crap and REALLY pixelated. This occurs regardless of what programs I use to play the movie and wether or not I play it directly from a DVD or from the hard drive.

I tried adjusting the color ratios for my monitor, but all that did was make ALL the graphics on my monitor look like crap so I reset it back to what it was. This problem only occurs when I play DVD or ripped DVD movies and the color is perfect for everything else.

Any ideas ? I've posted in a lot of different forums and managed to stump everyone.

The drivers for the graphics card have separate corrections for normal desktop and video playback (at least nvidia). Check settings on the nvidia control panel or in CCC for Radeon. Perhaps reïnstall driver.

Reïnstall codecs; most programs use the same codec, so changing programs doesn't always solve an issue. Maybe try third party codec pack (free). Have a look at the playback settings of the programs to see if there are alternative playback methods and try those.

Maybe the video hardware acceleration on the card is going south, but that's just a wild guess, not even sure that's possible.

Just throwing some thoughts out there.

I have an Nvidia GForce FX5500.

I've reinstalled the drivers (that was the first thing I thought of).
I recall that this problem started after a bunch of Windows security updates went in.

Well then replacing the codecs would be my best guess. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

For example:

Combined Community Codec Pack

Download K-Lite Codec Pack

Yes I agree with Arclight, the CODECS would be the first thing I would try, sounds like the movies are trying to play with only 256 colours, just a thought but do you have the desktop video settings set for 32bit colour?
