Possibly my most favourite female vocalist beside Dido.

This is a famous song by Antonios Carlos Jobim, many have covered it. But Basia did imo the - by far - best cover of it, surpassing easily even the master himself.

Basia was part of Matt Bianco and theior debut album in I think 1984, and there was a reunion-album in the early 00-years. She still is in business and still performs live on stage at Jazz-festivals. And her voice still has the characteristic sparkling traits that made her famous when she was young. From my personal hall-of-fame list.

Basia is also one of my favourites, especially in this song from "Matt Bianco"

With school shootings and all sorts of stupid events and things happening, sometimes it helps to just sit back and have a good laugh.

How about a take off of James Brown " living in America."

Weird Al Yankovic got a hold of this classic and do you think he left it alone ? Nooooo, Nevah !!!!

Amazingly, Weird Al does a spot on Imitation of James Brown right down to his dance moves, facial expressions and mannerisms.

Fun fact. This is the same set and back up singers and dancers James Brown used when he did his rendition for Rocky IV.

This is Weird Al Yankovic- Living with a hernia.

...and now,the cultural portion of our program...

Several posts back, a couple of the posters made reference to the depiction(s) of Beethoven in film; I found this YT posting of a complete film dealing with Beethoven's life from the viewpoint of a contemporary child of the period; the film was part of a series of films create for children on the lives of great composers; it was released in 1992 and I found out about it at the time when a clerk at the Tower Records Classical store on the Sunset Strip brought it to mt attention, knowing I was a big LvB fan; I was surprised by not only how good the production was fro a kid's film, but, also, how well researched was the screenplay; all the various interactions of LvB with the world around him were taken from descriptions given in exhaustive major biographies of the man; this is the closest I have seen to what the real LvB seemed to his contemporaries...

I also have found another YT posting of the great BBC film Eroica, a dramatization of a rehearsal for the premiere of LvB's 3rd "Eroica" Symphony; at the time of its premiere, it was widely panned as dissonant and discordant and in violation of the norms of musical structure; not long afterwards, it was recognized as a pivotal work that forever changed classical music compositions and composers...

A couple of notes about the symphony itself: when LvB first wrote the work, he had dedicated the symphony the Napoleon because LvB viewed the French Revolution as a great move forward for liberty and freedom from European monarchies and he admired Napoleon as a leader of the cause; however, upon learning Napoleon had taken upon himself the title of Emperor of France and made himself a monarch, LvB was so angered he destroyed the title page of the original dedication to Napoleon on the work's manuscript and, instead, rewrote the first page excluding the original dedication...

Also in the film, there is a scene where the equally great composer Joseph Haydn, who, in fact, had been a teacher of Beethoven; given Haydn was a brilliant, conservative (musically and philosophically), deeply religious man and his student LvB was brilliant, progressive (musically and philosophically), iconoclastic man, the two often were at ends with each other, but LvB revered Haydn as a teach and inspiration and Haydn's opinion of his work was, indeed, important to LvB; Haydn did initially find Eroica "loud and bombastic" he actually did say, upon hearing the work, "From now, everything is different"...

Beethoven would cement his place in the hall of musical fame years later with the 5th Symphony, whose opening two sets of four imperative notes was likened by one musicologist as having the same import as Martin Luther's nailing of his 95 thesis to the door of the church, beginning the age of Protestant rebellion...

Trivia on the lead actor, Ian Hart: in addition to portraying Beethoven, Hart also portrayed another, more modern, musical giant, John Lennon in the movie Backbeat (1994) ...

Peter Horton is an Austrian chansonier and guitar virtuoso. An exceptional phenomenon in the German-speaking music landscape.
