The word hoodlum originated in San Francisco in the 1870s when there was a notorious criminal gang leader named Muldoon who had a propensity for beating up newspaper reporters who reported or commented on his nefarious doings; one reporter wanted to publish a particularly scathing account of one of the Muldoon Gang's crimes, but there was fear that Muldoon would take his wrath out on either the reporter or the paper, and there were even a threats of libel suits from Muldoon, in the past, so the reporter and the paper's editor decided to print the article with the name 'Muldoon' spelled backwards, "Noodlum' as an attempt to have a cover against the gang's revenge; however, the typesetter misread "Noodlum' and, instead set the word as 'Hoodlum', a term that has been used to describe criminals ever since...
