In action in November 1940 HMS Javelin had both bow

and stern

wrecked by German torpedoes and shellfire. With only 155 of her original 353 feet left intact, Javelin was towed back to base. A year later she was back in action.

Built just four mile from my place of abode...

HMS Kelly (pennant number F01) was a K-class destroyer of the British Royal Navy, and flotilla leader of her class. She served through the early years of the Second World War; in Home Waters, off Norway and in the Mediterranean. Throughout her service, Kelly was commanded by Lord Louis Mountbatten. She was lost in action in 1941 during the Battle of Crete. In addition, Mountbatten served as commander (Captain (D)) of the 5th Destroyer Flotilla.
Kelly was built by Hawthorn Leslie and Company at Hebburn on the River Tyne. She was laid down on 26 August 1937, launched on 25 October 1938 and commissioned on 23 August 1939, just 11 days before commencement of hostilities. She was named after Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Kelly.

It'd be remiss of me not to mention HMAS Australia; our one and only (light carriers aside) capital ship !

Even if she didn't do a whole lot and met a rather inglorious end, she's still gotta be worth a mention I reckon!

EDIT: She did manage to launch a plane or two, and had a muntiny, so it wasn't all dull!

Looks like a fine ship. On her way back, she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, but luckily the majority of her crew escaped. Unluckily, a large number of them were killed by sharks before they were finally picked up. It was the largest shark attack in history.
