Default 688(I) Problem

I recently re-acquired Jane's 688(I) - original, not from the multi-pack. I installed on a Vista system, and it seems to run fine. I then downloaded and installed the 1.07 patch from the Sonalyst site, and I have a problem. The game fires up ok, but when I click on the sub (depart) button, the game crashes as it starts to load the helmsman's screen. Remove the patch, and all is well. I'd kinda like to have the update, though. Anyone have any thoughts?

TIA

Just a hunch. Don't know if this will work, but put the new patch in and also put in the Renderware DLL's. See if that works. You just have to unzip this file into your 688i folder.

It may work, it may not, but it's worth a try.

By Golly, that did it! I thought about trying that, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to try it - Vista is a bit unusual compared to XP. I decided to give it a try though, and it worked. Many thanks Captain Blacklight!

Now all I have to do is get used to the fact that 688(I) uses true bearings to contacts while SHIV uses relative bearings!

Yeah. 688i, Sub Command, and Dangerous Waters all use true bearing to target and for steering. I have them all installed on my machine and I actually play them all. I really like the campagn in 688i... especially the continuous missions where it picks up where you left off on the previous mission so you really have to watch how much ammo/decoys you use. I wish this was doable in DW or Sub Command (or even in the 688i mission editor) but that's a function they seem to have left out.

I cannot get 688(I) to install on my Vista laptop, it tries but I get "Error copying files". Any ideas (other than pitch Vista, which I am considering)?

Sounds to me like you either have a bad (or scratched, or dirty) disk or drive rather than a problem with Vista. I have a DVD drive in one of my computers that has trouble sometimes reading stuff from certain parts of disks (I'm assuming that it's some kind of alignment problem with the reader lens on the drive as it writes the disks fine and they read fine in other DVD drives).
688i installs and runs fine on Vista.

To see if it is a disk problem, you can try this :

-on your desktop create a new empty folder
-explore (do not launch) your 688 CD and copy everything from it to the empty folder you create on your desktop

if there is no file error message, that's good the cd is okay

Now instead of using the CD to install the game, go into the folder you have on your desktop , in which you copied the CD content, remove the CD and launch the installer from here.

I don't know for Vista specifically, but maybe it is needed to install as an administrator as Vista had some different file installing protection in here.
