688(i) sound effects bug

A while back I installed 688(i) from the Naval Combat Pack on my grandmother's computer, which is a rather old win98 system. It worked fine, on my current visit I've noticed that there seems to be some kind of bug. The sound effects won't work at all, but the music and the intro sound works fine. I can't really try a re-install as I don't have the disc with me here, but will bring it in and try on my next visit if I haven't fixed it by then. Has anyone else encountered this sort of problem with 688(i) before?
