Default I'm new

Hi everybody I'm new to this community. I found this community by playing silent hunter 5 (only for 2 weeks) to find answers on the targetting and target search techniques. First of all thanks for the tips -> hydrophone tracking, I'm still struggling with the stadimeter (highest mast, roof) it looks like it is different for some types of ships. But thanks to you all for providing a forum like this, because no where else on the web you can find help for using submarine systems.
Some of you may not find this game that much simulator, but as my first submarine game i ever played, i love it, and got intrested in submarines because of this game. I play on 93% realistic (only event cam and external cam are enabled to see my toredos miss there target )

For starters I'm fascinated by the intelligents of the germans, providing a U-boat and the way they control it with those "simple" methos. And hereby my first question to you all, were i can not find a descent answer of on the www.
If no radar was invented, and looking at the game SH5. How do they measure the distance to the bottom of the ocean, did they measured it?
For example: the pirates back in the day (jack sparrow time) used a rope with nots. Airplanes use radar (doppler radar). Now where i am in the game (beginning) there is no radar, no rope nor sonar ping availble. So how does the guy shouting:" we are in shallow waters! " knows? And if there is a meter were can i see it? If it is a unrealistic "bug" in the game how did they do it in 1939 in real life?

WELCOME ABOARD!

To answer your question, they did have a form of Sonar called Atlas Echelot. It pointed straight downwards and could be used to 'ping' the bottom.

As to the guy yelling about shallow water, I have no idea. He shouldn't know anything you don't.

thanks Steve

Because of your golden tip "Atlas Echelot" i found following info on the web (http://www.ubootwaffe.net/u505/cr_ca.html)
It seems that the first U-boat relied on the navigator and dept maps and later on the Atlas Echelot was introduced (simmular to doppler radar but lower frequency because of the frequency limitation of the water -> sonar) .

Welcome aboard, Keutel!

I think you will find that by hanging about here you can learn a lot not only about the games/sims but about real life submarine stuff.
