Default Is Destroyer Command worth buying

Yesterday, I went down town and found a retail copy of DC on sale $15.99. Is it worth buying? Is DC a very hard core naval simulator? Does it support internet gameplay?

I am also looking for Harpoon 3. When was it released? Is it an old game? Is it like Fleet Command?

I would not pay that price for Destroyer Command no way, I checked the UK prices brand new £5.00 odd. DC is an old game but it's good fun it has a similar lay out like SH2 so if you like SH2 you probably will like DC.

It's pretty aged. Would it look out-dated?

Have a look at my SH2 pictures here -

They will give you an idea what it looks like as both look very Simula.

Sure, but not as much as old DOS/Win95 games. After all, there is 3D environment, Direct3D graphics acceleration and 1024x768 res. Not great by today's standards, but doesn't look that bad at all. Check the review section at Subsim's main page, there are pictures attached and you can have an idea of how it looks like.

Hardcore: There are many options, so you can go from full manual to full auto on everything, you can customize it to your taste.

Multi: DC2 allows multi against other DC or SH2, though subsim's unofficial Projekt Messerwetzer patch is nearly mandatory for internet play. LAN isn't that bad, though PM enhances it also considerably.

Price: For the price you mentioned you can get here in Spain the combo SH2/DC

Sigh .... where do I begin ....

Do you like old books, prefer the smell of real leather, like to wear the same comfortable jacket for years, prefer driving a Model T ford to a smart modern sports car, ...... then DC is for you at any price. The thing about DC is it does things no other sim can do.

It's not as pretty as SH3 but you can sail/steer the DDs, drop depth charges, and launch torpedo attacks. At least you can actually get inside the ships instead of admiring them from afar like in SH3/4. Its not got the prettiest of models but ( with editing) you have virtually every type of warship at your disposal, and for every nationality you care to choose.

If you can find the mods it actually can look quite good too.

The biggest complaint about SH2 was the lack of replayability; that is all the missions were scripted. The odd thing is that in DC it was the same, but it felt more realistic that way. Part of this is because submarines were told to go into enemy territory and sink ships, which obviously a lone destroyer couldn't do. This meant that the missions were either simple escort missions or you were part of a group.

Also, DC allowed several campaigns to be stored at once, so you could have several campaigns at once.

Also mentioned is the multi-play. You can actually play DC and SH2 against other players, and as mentioned you could also write missions that let you play against other destroyers. Much fun, especially with the mods that let you run battleships (not to mention the WWI mod).

Go for it, your going to be happy when you get this classic game, also it's moddable so you can control the big BBs in the game not DDs.

For you Steve.

DC is an open canvas to virtually any gun based naval sim

Check E-bay, you may find it even cheaper.

I am playing Destroyer Command at the moment and I find it cool even if its an old game. I am at the moment doing 2 different campaigns one is the Atlantic and one is the Pacific.

I have started the Pacific Campaign first to which is cool especially being attacked by jap Zero's, Val's and Kates about 10 times in the last mission and the going to find the Jap carrier and sink it.

I'm probably too late as you've probably bought DC (), but....

Yes. It has a kind of infamous reputation in the sim world as an unfinished, bug ridden piece of software, but it's a unique sim as far as I know. It has all the flaws of SH2 (scripted missions etc) but I personally have had a lot of fun with it. (Even patched, it has some quirks though)

The main disappointment is the sub hunting. The AI throughout DC is generally poor, but the U boat skippers too often remain at periscope depth and you ram just ram them.

For me though DC really redeems itself in the anti aircraft and torpedo action. I always found the anti aircraft station a lot of fun in SH2 and often found it a pity that I had to dive to survive In DC however, the anti aircraft action is even more fun. Wave after wave of dive and torpedo bombers are there to shoot down, whether you do it by yourself at the station, or order the crew to do it and watch from the bridge.

The most baffling initially, yet most satisfying aspect is the torpdedo station. The manual isn't much help, but I eventually managed to figure it out, and I can tell you, hitting a Japanese or German cruiser with a torpdedo that you fired with manual sight information is extremely satisfying. If you have trouble with the torpedo station, PM me and I'll explain how to use it

I wouldn't say spamming, maybe just an alternative option.
