GWX Missions won't load? Huh?

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan.

At first I thought my 10 year old installation that I've copied across several computers went corrupt somehow. I was trying to load some of the single missions with a type xxi and it kept crashing to desktop after the simulation loaded and started.

So I refreshed my install from my backup. Same deal. Well, ok, let's see if I can find another copy of the disk since I've already bought SH3 twice now. All I can find is Russian copies. Damn. So I look on steam and its only $3 on sale right now! Ok. I install the steam version and install GWX and fire it up without even installing any of the optional GWX mods. If I load the mission to sink the italian battleship it crashes. Even with the default sub. Same on the Convoy 69 mission. Some of these missions won't load it seems. Which is really frustrating because it takes 4-5 minutes to load a mission even with SH3 completely cached in memory on a pretty fast i7.

Also if I play with the type XXI the interior tends to disappear randomly and I am left with just the untextured walls of the interior. What the hell? That kept happening and that's when I started assuming that my install was corrupt somehow. Is that just a bug?

I mean GWX hit version 3. I would assume that the missions were playtested at one point, so why won't they load for me? As far as I know the steam install is ok, and besides my old install has the same exact problem. I just never played the single missions until now. Is this normal and I just wasted a few hours trying to solve a known problem? I'm so confused. I'm running on Win10 if that makes any difference. SH3 seems to work fine under it though I never tried to run widescreen or anything crazy.
