Man did I ever just rock a convoy. Its mid 1942 and I'm on my way to the coast of Japan to drop of an agent in my gato class sub. Its around 3am in the morning and I'm running on the surface finally safe from the dive bombers. I get a warship sound contact at long range. I decide to ignore it for the time being. Soon I get sound contacts for several merchants and a couple more destroyers. It turns out they're heading directly for me so I go to periscope depth and plot a course towards the convoy. Once within 3000m I empty my fore reserves into the merchants. 3 torpedoes to a large merchant, two to a medium merchant and one to a small merchant. The two smaller merchants are destroyed with no problem but the large merchant is able to limp away (after 3 torpedoes!).

This first volley complete, I reposition myself to be in a better way to shoot my aft torpedoes (moving at 1/3 the whole time naturally) while the fore tubes reload. As I'm reading for my second volley, two mitsuki class destroyers are basically right on top of me. I'm able to stick a torpedo in the side of one but fail to sink it. The damaged destroyer is baring down on me from behind. I decide to play for all the marbles. I accelerate to flank and open the door on an aft torpedo. The destroyer lines up right behind me as I expected following my incredibly audible at flank. Hook line and sinker, he finally goes down. The second destroyer follows a similar fate in pursuit of me and goes down with two torpedoes to the bow.

The last destroyer is stuck behind a half dozen merchants on the other side of the convoy. I finally get my second volley. I manage to take out one more ship but miss two shots. The final destroyer is finally coming up to me and I manage to sink it with one lucky shot to the side. It is now open season on the rest of the merchants. I only have four torpedoes left any how so I surface the boat and sink the remaining 5 ships with my deck gun with minimal resistance.

I was very proud of myself. Not a single ship survived my fury and not one destroyer managed to get close enough to harm me. Total victory!

Mid. 1943 3.00 pm

Not much to this one really just a really bad day

Anyway I was driving along at about 140ft when I hear the sonar start to beep so I surface to see what it was and lone behold I surfaced right in the middle of a Japanese task force with about 20 battleships 18 destroyers 13 destroyer escorts 8 carriers and at least 15 merchants.

Well I managed to dive (somehow) while being shelled by every single ship. (weird thing is they all missed) I got down to about 80ft then a single *********g depth charge hit my *********g conning tower and I got the submarine destoyed screen.(after spending almost a week on this 1 patrol)

I learned something new that day and that is...

DO NOT SURFACE WHEN YOUR SONAR BEEPS!!

Alas fellow sailors. The USS Sargo has been sunk. December 5th, 1943. All crew lost.

On a return voyage of dropping off intel then patroling the East China Sea, the USS Sargo was sunk by a Japanese unknown destroyer at approxomately 1:00 am (4am in Pearl). We were all asleep.

In reality...I run this game at 1x TC when I can...so I did while asleep. I was running deep and silent....and at 4am my time I was woken up by pinging and alarms and the sonarman practically screaming his lungs off....but it was too late. The pings came in at the last second, somehow the destroyer found us by sound.

I have opened up new command back in March 1942. Tambor class, SS-200....the USS Thresher.

These smart cookies kept right on my case more than four hours and not letting me come up to P depth let alone get close enough for a shot at convoy. In this shot I'm setting still at 260 feet and at silent running, but they still pester me.

After more than four hours all four DD's went back to the far distanced convoy I could not possibly overtake for the amount of diesel I had left.

This taken Jan. 4th 1944 near Rabaul.

Things like this makes the adrenaline flow rich and makes SH4 like a good book that can't be put down.

A little trick I picked up on a patrol

I was out on my third patrol, after being demoted to a porpoise class, because I got my Gato all shot up and it had to be scrapped. I compleated dropping of my agent in Hishashou, I was headed home and came across a convoy, 3 tankers some mediums a few smalls and 4 destroyers in the common for the era diamond pattern protection screen. I sunk two of the tankers one with 5 torps ( one was a dud) and the other with 4, I took down a medium with three, and while attacking the third tanker, was becoming a target of interest for the escorts. I did some quick reasearch and figured out the draft of the tanker, and then decided to try something I read about them doing back in the day. I got on the same course as the tanker met its speed at 6 knots, dove deep enought to be under it, advanced to 7 knots to get under it and then matched it's speed again. I was not lost to the destroyers but I became impossible to get untill I left my hiding spot. I stayed there under the tanker for 5 hours game time and waited for it to get dark, I then dove and advanced speed to full to get out from under my metal rock. I managed to get away with only one round of depth charges that were set too high to impact my sub. I lost them and returned back to PH with nothing but a scratch. It's a tricky manuever, and even trickier to stay underneath, but if you can do it, it can be a lifesaver in times of trouble.

I did that once and I had a destroyer collide with the merchant I was hiding under and sink itself. Very entertaining to watch.

That pigboat has really great lines, like a 2020 movie recorded in 1960.

I tried a little parallel parking while I was in port tonight:

Here is the U.S.S. Balao parked in a slip next to the H.M.S. Kent (or equal) ...
