The destroyer should have called for backup and soon more of his friends would arrive either to sink the Unoot or to pick up survivors.
Moreover the proximity to land increaces the chances of them being rescued.

I don't know about you but I find them a bit of a nuisance at the beginning of the war....same with the Swordfish
