Watched the 2004 movie of The Merchant of Venice last night, fantastic performance from Al Pacino, and Jeremy Irons was excellent as always.
Would recommend it.

The Purge
Very entertaining and interesting, I think. It is of course very unrealistic, very utopic. But sometimes "what if..." movies are the best entertainers.

It stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones).

Looking for light popcorn entertainment? The Purge is for you..

Looked somewhat interesting.

Until every teenager in the world saw it and blew up the hype. "OMG...The Purge was scary...what would you do?"

I thought from the commercials and some articles that it's a perfectly good reason to have the 2nd Amendment...but..I haven't seen it so I don't know how it goes.

And I have no wish to turn this thread political now...

If you think about it, the movie is indirectly arguing the Gun Control debate. It sounds like an interesting movie...but from a political standpoint, it seems a little fishy to me. Like they're using movies to sway our opinions.

Of course they do!

And it is nothing new at all. Media controls the people. Who controls the media, controls the people. Just think of all the propaganda/recruitment movies like Top Gun (love that movie actually...) or Pearl Harbor, nothing but cheap propaganda, made to influence a certain audience.

Who was Pearl Harbor made for again? Not the Japanese, as it showed them shooting at hospitals (which didn't happen), and it certainly wasn't made for Americans, seeing as it showed the Americans as idiots who kept brushing their teeth in an air raid...

It was made for dating couples. The boys could see an action film and the girls could see a chick-flick. Unfortunately it failed on all fronts.

(BTW, not sure if it's a correction or not since I don't know if hospitals were attacked at Pearl...but in E.B. Sledge's Memoir, there are many times where the Japanese knowingly attacked medical personnel on Okinawa and Peleliu. There were stories from all around the 1st Marine Div. in that book of Corpsmen and Stretcher Bearers were often specifically attacked.)

Pearl Harbor reeeaaally is a baad, bad movie. Only thing I personally liked was Kate Beckinsale, she looked gorgeous in that movie. But really, that is it...

When it premiered in theaters, I did a literal face palm when the filmmakers made General Dolittle's relatively tiny raid on Japan look like the Bombing of the Ruhr.

That movie bothered me, as not one person smoked a cigarette!

It was the 40s! Everyone smoked, they came with ration kits for soldiers.

It was a Rom-Com, disgused as a war movie. Misleading trailers, the whole nine...

What a pile of crap...I like Ben Affleck, but Yechhhh!

Everyone poops too, but that is no reason to include it in a movie. There are a lot of things that "everyone" does that are not included in movies.

I like the idea of NOT having movie actors smoking in a movie unless there is a rare instance where smoking is critical to the story. Just like pooping, it can be assumed without actually showing it.

We don't need to glamorize smoking in movies.

So...I just tried watching Blade Runner...

It's stunningly beautiful, as future dystopia goes, it's up there with the best, but...it just didn't scratch that itch for me. I suspect it's the Noir element of it, I just can't connect it with the futuristic era.

So I've switched over to C-SPAN to watch a dark comedy instead.
