That's another good one.

I think it was worth 5$...Next on the list to buy are Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Shaun of the Dead and Apocalypse Now.

The "thank god for the sickle cell, was amusing, when the black guy proved he was not too Buku. Freaking Animal Mother ruled.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman made that movie.

A little trivia, R Lee Ermey was serving as an advisor on the film, when Kubrick gave him the part, most of his quips to the recruits were off the cuff.

One of the few actors allowed to ad lib in a Kubrick film, who was notorious for being picky and particular.

Many laughs in that movie, in a gallows/black humor sense.

I love the first half of the movie at Parris Island.

Because that was the funny part, it got kinda real later on, but enough black humor sprinkled in to keep the mood.

Animal mother was a great character, and I enjoyed the dynamic between Joker and Raptorman.

I loved how Joker "grew up", you almost saw his childhood leave him. Matthew Modine was phenominal.

Vincent D'onofrio is well underrated as his part was so short, the look he gives Joker sitting on the toilet is great acting, you saw lunacy in his eyes.
Man there is so much more to that flick than the first half, a well directed and acted movie, and underrated.

The entire thing is such a great movie. It's in my Top 5 war movies easily.

Agree. I like when Animal Mother and Joker first meet.

I'm always amazed at how different people can have different takes on the same movie.

R. Lee Ermey was the only thing I liked, and they had to ruin it with a totally bogus end for him. Stupid as well.

In my opinion it never got real. Worst Vietnam movie ever.

But just in my opinion. I'm glad you guys got so much out of it and enjoyed it so much.

Steve, I know you lived that life, and mean no disrespect.

But it portrayed Joker losing his sense of humor as he saw the rawness, and reality of war.

He spent a long time trying to "get into the *stuff*" (in the movie it was an s word)

Then when he got there, he regretted it.

You are looking at it as a whole, and not on the way things effected the induvidual characters. Like Pyle, and especially joker.
Sure it was overdone at points, but the progression of Joker is what the movie was about, it was about his youth and good naturedness being ruined by horriffic things he saw.

He did not joke and smile at the end....

He was ruined, what Kubrick intended.

Sure it is anti war, but it gives a compelling reason for the view. IMHO
(which is why the second part of the movie should not be ignored, as it is the point of the film.)

As I said, just my opinion. I far preferred The Boys in Company C, or even The Seige of Firebase Gloria, which also had R. Lee Ermey. Platoon was great, though I went into it expecting something other than what it was. Go Tell the Spartans is a personal favorite, though it does have its problems. Born on the Fourth of July is exceptional.

I looked all over for The Boys in Company C but I never could find it in any stores.

I've seen Platoon...but none of the other ones. My movie store had Born on the Fourth of July...but they wanted like 20$ for it...I won't pay that much for an older movie.

But it's not older to you.

Amazon has The Boys in Company C, but also for $20. On the other hand they have Born On the Fourth of July through Amazon Prime for $7.35. If you don't have Prime you can get a new copy for $3.35 ($7.34 with shipping) or used "Very Good" for $1.45 ($5.44 with shipping).

I've looked around, and Boys is about the same price everywhere.

I don't have Prime...but I'll keep an eye out for The Boys in Company C.

Born on the Fourth Of July shouldn't be 20$ at Hastings...but it was...therefore, I waited.

Soon though...very soon...

I've talked about The Pacific before...but I don't think I have in this thread.

I finished With The Old Breed yesterday and I'm currently re-watching the series.

E.B. Sledge is a hero to me (among some others). There's something about his story that just clicks with me. I don't know what it is.

I haven't read any of the other memoirs...but all those men are just as inspiring. John Basilone, Robert Leckie, Sidney Phillips... and all the other thousands of men who fought in the hell of the Pacific Islands. Army, Navy, Marines, and soldiers of other nationalities.

I think this is a must-watch.
