Nope no tunnels through this one; lots of bunkers though. hint: it's no longer technically an island as the north end was filled in for a bridge/highway However when the sloughs fill with water it's very much an island...again. Robin Williams filmed here in What Dreams May Come as part of representation of hell.

Is it the oldest naval shipyard on the West coast established by one of the most famous naval officers in USA history?

WINNER! It was all a plot to drag U back to the surface! and you've posted enough pictures of it yourself! MARE ISLAND (named for Gen Vallejo's runaway mare) first commanded by ADM Farragut. In the 1943 film Destination Tokyo with Cary Grant, Mare Island cranes and the dockside are prominent in the beginning along with shots of the Vallejo coast line.
In the 1953 film Submarine Command with William Holden, a major portion of the movie is filmed on Mare Island with some shots of Vallejo. Robin Williams filmed scenes aboard the old rusty Essex class USS Oriskeny, depicting hell, when she was moored for years to B scrapped across the Napa river from my ferry depot...before becoming part of a Florida reef in 2006. Those 'sloughs': In 1969, the Navy transferred its (Vietnam War) Brown Water Navy Riverine Training Forces from Coronado, California, to Mare Island. Swift Boats (Patrol Craft Fast-PCF), and PBRs (Patrol Boat River) conducted boat operations throughout the currently named Napa-Sonoma Marshes State Wildlife Area, on the north and west portions of Mare Island. Reshoot scenes from Coppola's Apocalypse Now were filmed here as well. Private boating was prohibited from approaching too close; although of late, a certain 25' Catalina has not been accosted by the Coast Guard within 50 yards of the fabled, still active, waterfront buildings and moorings. <enlarges) What the Japs wish they had bombed in WWII! @ Betanov: Treasure Island right north of Yerba Buena Island and completely manmade for the 1939 Exposition is where I spent a year doing the show Trauma, one Aerosmith concert and the old Mariner seaplane hangers housed our sets; and has three wineries!!!! With the USS Hornet floating Museum just to the East at Alameda NAS and the Liberty USS Jeremiah O'Brien (D-Day participant and still sailing!) and the WWII veteran Gato Class USS Pampanito just to the west at Fisherman's Pier...My ideal starting point for a SUBSIM meet!

That was fast. Correct on all counts and in keeping with the Mare Island theme.
