What I am thankful for is that of the three "Eichis" that started it all in April 2020, all three still are alive and now are in their fourth winter already.

When you know that in Germany 75-80% of the animals of a birth cohort do not even make it past their first year and only around 10% of the animals live to see their 3rd birthday and not even every 100th squirrel lives to be five years old, then you know that this is a great success. European red squirrels can live for 10-11 years if they are well fed, cared for in case of illness and have good shelters. However, having two litters every year wears out females prematurely.

The three, presumably brothers, come every day, even now, plus 2-3 guest squirrels at the moment. I call them Kira, Taro and Sari, or the three nutketeers. I feed them about 20 kg of hazelnuts and 20 kg of walnuts every quarter. Nothing else is accepted, the animals are very particular and very individual. On very, very rare occasions, when we met by chance, when I was on my way to the feeding stations, they took something out of my hand. But that is extremely rare. I dont lure them and I dont try to train them. I just love them and enjoy that they are here, almost every day. As I used to say: "Ein Eichhörnchen bringt Freude in dein Leben." Its true!

Did you know it: our only one tree squirrel species in Germany is under special protection. In Germany, anyone who kills, tortures, deprives a squirrel of its freedom or destroys its burrow can be punished with up to 2 years in prison and a fine of up to 50,000 euros, in one federal state even 3 years and 60,000 euros.
