SUBSIM Meeting 2008 - Page 37

Hi all! This is the first chance I've had to post since we got here. Yesterday we went to Seawolf Park, looked at Cavalla and Stewart, and spent the morning cleaning up stuff. A big shipping container holding all the collected ship parts and accessories had blown about half a mile down the road and ended up a twisted wreck. Two of our younger members climbed inside and passed muddy pieces out to us. The rest combed the beach for whatever we could recover. We found quite a bit, and they seemed pretty happy with our work.

We went to lunch, and I was lucky enough to be seated next to Captain Zeb Alford, who was XO of the Cavalla during the period when she was converted to be one of the first experimental attack subs. He had a lot of good stories to tell.

Those of you logged onto the webcam got to watch - last night we had a question-and-answer session with Dan (Elanaiba). He asked specific questions about how we'd like to see things implemented in the future, and what we'd like to see. It was fun. Dan's a great guy.

I'll post a full report from my point of view when I get home.

Number 88 in the slideshow was my favourite.

Looks like the hardhat tour of USS Texas was a blast. How I envy you all.

I am 41 ... what were you expecting a bunch o' pimply faced teenagers? :rotfl:

All joking aside we have an excellent mix of folks here. I only wished more of you could have come. The texas HH Tour was fantastic. The ship really is in pretty decent shape for her age. And the tour guides were quite knowledgable but at the same time humble enough to learn from some of there more esteemed tourees (of which I am NOT one most of the tech stuff just wizzed over my head).

Anyways BBQ today, which will be fun, not only to I get to pick the brains of my colleagues but stuff my face with Texas BBQ as well.

Well, the 2008 SUBSIM meeting is now coming to an end, so the webcam will be down until next time. Thanks for letting us share, we will post pics of the BB Texas tour, the gun range, the Cavalla volunteer work, the SUBSIM paintball war, the Lehmann-proof glass door, and much more... soon
