August 21, 1940

12.55

U-47, responding to a contact report located a Large Eastbound convoy in Grid AL 82. A contact report was sent and convoy was shadowed. A report was received ordering immediate attack.

U-47 infiltrated the forward screen of convoy submerged and set up on center column with large tankers. At 14.32 fired two TI G7a torpedoes on a 8500 ton tanker range 1700 meters, fired one TI at large merchant at 900 meters and one at a large merchant at 1000 meters.

Torpedoes 1 and 2 hit the tanker. Tanker assumed not loaded with fuel as did not burn nor explode, but a noticeable list to starboard quickly developed. Torpedo 3 hit the large merchant but failed to explode...torpedo was a dud!

Torpedo 4 missed its intended target as its visible wake allowed vessel to slow enough to avoid, torpedo passed just ahead perhaps 2 meters. Per orders magnetic pistols were not active.

However, torpedo 4 would hit a 5000 ton merchant in next column which went up in a impressive fireworks show, most likely ammunition ship. At this point, enemy corvette was closing fast. A hard dive to 100 meters was ordered, rigging for silent routine and wasserbombe.

After twenty minutes and a few close wasserbombe, enemy lost contact once reached depth of 120 meters. After some time, eased to periscope depth.

Observed tanker sinking by the bow, but not burning. A oil slick and debris field visible from the ammunition ship sunk. A Hog Island Type freighter was passing astern, opened aft tube and fired from 1500 meters.

Torpedo missed target but impacted a Modern Passenger/Freighter 4500 tons, leaving a large visible hole admiships, vessel burning profusely. Enemy destroyer immediately closed out position. Resumed silent routine and went to 120 meters. A somewhat intense attack with several close wasserbombe occurred but after one hour and a depth of 160 meters, slipped away.

The modern passenger freighter sunk at 15.42

Surfaced several hours later after all clear and raced ahead, conducting torpedo reload.

Plans for a night surface attack inside the convoy were spoiled by the near full moon. Instead, opted for attack down moon from outside convoy flooded down to reduce visibility.

August 22, 1940

01.50 Targeted 9000 ton freighter in center column range 7500 meters. Fired tubes 1,2,3 TI G7a set to low power. Fired Tube No. 4 TI G7a at 4600 ton tanker range 6500 meters.

Two of three torpedoes hit freighter. Torpedo 4 hit the tanker. Large fires and explosions visible. Torpedo which missed target failed to hit anything and reached its end of run.

With decks awash U-47 turned to fire stern tube at outside column not just 3000 meters away. However, a enemy corvette suddenly emerged from the night firing, turned for down the throat shot.

A round from her forward gun found its mark, hitting U-47 in the stern, holing the sub. Stern tube disabled, compartment began to flood. Ordered boat to surface and manned guns. However, the flooding soon caused boat to sink to 8 meters, those on deck gun and AA gun aft were washed overboard. Boat maintained depth at 8 meters, with conning tower exposed.

A British destroyer arrived on scene at high speed and closed in, outrunning the corvette. While her main guns missed, her machine guns scored hits killing some on bridge. Continued attempts to blow tanks and surface briefly brought sub to 6 meters, but it soon sunk back to 8 meters.

Enemy destroyer rammed U-47, crippling the vessel, killing or knocking all remaining topside overboard. U-47 disappeared beneath the waves within seconds.

Default East China Sea Patrol April 1945

Some screens from a recent war patrol.

Not sure what this little bugger is, but every time we submerged it appeared. Spooky.

This one is kind of hard to see in a photo so i'll narrate.
we had just gutted a convoy of tankers and then went deep to evade.
"Deep" being relative in that we were in 275 foot waters.
we caught a break and found a thermal at approx 255 feet.
this DD and her cousins were pinging their a$$es off trying to find us.
THIS particular DD sailed right over the top of us, at about 1/2 knot more than our speed. it felt like it took an hour for her to completely pass us by.
And pass us by she did.

This last shot is the same engagement with a second DD sailing right over the top of us. fortunately, we were not really breathing so there was nothing for them to hear.

Nice. East China Sea is always a interesting area due to the shallow waters and heavy traffic. Esp when they do the slow roll above and cant tell if they actually detect you or just suspect or you expect them to drop and they do not...or they wait forever to drop lol.

Dark Waters
100 difficulty...contacts off, external cam on for this one.

59 Days at Sea....nearly 40,000 tons sunk. First patrol in a Type VIIC

3 tankers, 2 merchants, one destroyer. One Tanker damaged.

5 of 6 sunk and one damage were from same convoy attacked October 25-26, 1940.

Earlier convoy intercept spoiled by onset of storms, lost in storms was unable to relocate. Took nearly a month to find a anything else to shoot at.

Then, in a epic running night surface attack than went into next day, plenty of targets.

In all this triumph of the first patrol....just 90 kilometers from Lorient...a aircraft scored a direct bomb hit, sinking U-95.

Default U-95 Patrol Report (Full)

Dark Waters
100 difficulty, map contacts off, external cams on for screenshots.

First War Patrol of U-95, Type VIIC U Boat.

Screenshots in previous post.

__________________________________________________ _____________

Departed Lorient at 0800 on 3 September 1940 for Grid AM 11 in Western approaches.

At 21.33 hours on 11 September, spotted a 4,200 ton merchant at 4000 meters ahead. Unusual to find a unescorted merchant in these waters but perhaps felt his high speed would protect him in a solo run.

At 22.06 fired Tube No.1 (G7e TII). Torpedo missed for unknown reasons.
Possibly ran deep in heavy seas.

At 22.35 Fired Tube No 2(G6e TII). Torpedo impact!

22.40 Vessel damaged but not sinking. Manned deck gun.

22.50 Sunk K-M-KF-M-K 9 (B) Merchant 4,200 tons
in Grid AL 32. Resumed patrol.

The next ten days were uneventful with yachting like weather in the area.
No contacts were made. At 21.53 on September 21, received report of Large Convoy in Grid AL 26 on Easterly Course at 6 knots. Plotted intercept and set course, with estimated interception time just after noon on September 22.

Spotted smoke at 12.31 bearing 340 20000+ meters. Submerged for sound check and upon pre surfacing observation, found heavy fog and overcast arrived in area with increased sea state. Surfaced and soon rains, 29 knot winds, and heavy seas settled in. Set course 090 at 7 knots to stay ahead of convoy until storms cleared.

For next three days maintained contact via sound checks but storms persisted preventing attack. Finally, at 22.00 on September 25, storms cleared, but had lost contact with convoy since last sound check at 21.30.
Searched area for 48 hours but unable to regain contact. Resumed normal patrol. Shifting to Grid AL on 3 October.

For next thirty days, U-95 searched area with no contacts, except for a unknown group of high speed vessels on October 16 , believed to be high speed transports and destroyers. Due to heavy seas and high speed was unable to make contact.

Finally, on October 25 at 15.39 made contact with a large eastbound convoy.
in Grid AL 35.Sent contact report and moved ahead shadowing until nightfall for surface attack.

At 19.15 moved in for attack on a moonless, but clear night with
no fog and light clouds. Seas were nearly flat calm with a 1 kt wind from the west.

After several attempts to work inside convoy from astern, each flank, and from ahead, decided it was not advised due to general decent visibility and tight formation of convoy. Opted to fire from outside the convoy, targeting
two large tankers and a large freighter in center column with bow tubes.

Moved in (attempted to flood down but the Type VIIC would not flood down as Type VIIB did, will have to adjust the settings in files) for attack, closing to 1800 meters off port column. Just as prepared to fire,
the lead freighter in port column apparently spotted U-95, as she increased speed and made a hard evasive turn to starboard, believing she was the target. The lead escort, a corvette made a "U turn" and headed for U-95's location. A destroyer about 5000 meters astern, the outside port escort, began closing at high speed.

In order to salvage the attack, increased speed to flank and set up on the Hog Island Type A Freighter second in line in outside column.

Closed to just 800 meters when the searchlight of the corvette ahead to port at about 1000 meters illuminated U-95. Fired TII G7e in tube 1 at the freighter and under heavy machine gun and deck gun fire, ordered a dive.

Enemy began pinging and closing when suddenly...torpedo impact was heard as we passed 22 meters. A series of secondary explosions followed the initial impact. Several rounds of pinging and wasserbombe were endured by as usual once hit 125 meters enemy seemed to lose contact.

Enemy freighter could be heard breaking up (freighter was burning, dead in water from a solid hit amidships, blew out engine spaces)

After about one hour, came to periscope depth astern at just 400 meters was a large 8500 ton tanker. Readied stern tube. Given short range a simple 180 bearing and 180 AOB with 0 kt speed was used. TII G7e was fired from stern tube, which hit the tanker. Tanker did not burn or explode as anticipated,
likely not loaded with fuel.

A large freighter was ahead, estimated 8000 tons. Not a solid solution but fired Tube No.2 TI G7e. Torpedo missed when freighter made hard evasive turn away from our periscope.

Completed turn and fired two G7e TII from tubes 3,4 at the tanker torpedoed minutes ago, tanker burned and began to sink, suffered a large explosion in engine compartments about two minutes after impact.

A enemy destroyer was closing in and ordered 150 meters. As passed 90 meters, wasserbombe exploded near stern, causing minor damage,
most serious of which were leaks and minor flooding in stern torpedo
and propulsion compartments. (See Damage Section below). Flooding quickly
contained. Many more wasserbombe were dropped but all were above with U-95 at 165 meters depth.

After some time, enemy was astern dropping wasserbombe on a false contact. U-95 went to 200 meters secured silent routine and reloaded torpedoes.

After reload complete, resumed silent routine and returned to 160 meters.
After two hours, came to periscope depth to find convoy moved on, except one destroyer and the Hog Island freighter torpedoed earlier. Freighter was dead in water, low, and burning at range 5000 meters bearing 094. Destroyer was about 3000 meters on opposite side searching, dropping occasional wasserbombe.

Turned bow towards the stricken freighter, opened tube No.2 and fired
the TI G7a on high power from 3500 meters. Torpedo hit the target, breaking its back. U-95 secured and surface, sped away. Freighter's two sections lingered for 10 minutes before sinking.

Now at flank speed, Tube No.3 was reloaded with the last reserve torpedo,
a G7e TII a, and U-95 raced to catch convoy. Dodging the rear escort, a destroyer, slipped inside the convoy from astern and spotted group of tankers, which had formed in the rear, with a destroyer just ahead keeping guard. Spotted a large 10,500 ton tanker and moved to port side at 4000 meters. After passing the giant tanker, turned to starboard for bow shot.

Due to size and priority of target, as well as evasive movements, fired four
torpedoes with two aimed at middle of target, one at aft stack, and one at fore mast, to cover the target well.

About 20 seconds after firing last torpedo, noticed the destroyer ahead of the tanker contingent turned hard to port, increased speed and began using his signal light. U-95 has been spotted. Began a turn but soon spotted a destroyer astern, we were boxed in! Turned toward the escort ahead to present minimal angle and ordered a dive when he opened fire/illuminated with searchlight. As the boat was submerging, two out of four torpedoes hit the tanker, both after. A large fire and explosion occurred after the second hit. Now under, rigged for silent routine and wasserbombe.

First destroyer and second laid on solid attack for twenty minutes before losing contact. At 01.25 the 10,500 ton tanker sunk (sunk by the stern) in Grid AL 35.

After evasion and coming to periscope depth it was now 04.00. A quarter moon had risen silhouetting the convoy ahead to our port at 10,000 or so meters. U-95 quietly surfaced and moved along side the starboard columns,
inside convoy dodging a destroyer in process. All bow torpedoes expended,
Tube No.5 had a TII G7e loaded with a TI G7a in reserve.

Attempted set up on several freighters but spoiled by course and speed changes and a destroyer, which did not spot but his routine patrol forced U-95 out of attack position. Around 05.30 while setting up for another attack, convoy zigged slightly throwing U-95 out of position, then a destroyer spotted the boat and rushed in. U-95 submerged to 140 meters.

The destroyer briefly hunted then rejoined convoy. This would seemed to be
the new tactic, force our dive, hunt, then move back to guard convoy.
After surfacing, decided to secure and move ahead for dawn (which was quickly approaching) submerged attack.

At 07.02 fired Tube No.6 G7e TII at 5000 ton merchant in outside starboard column. Torpedo hit, but was a dud. Alerted by the hit, vessel alerted and two destroyers arrived on scene. Pinging for several minutes but no
wasserbombe were dropped, the destroyers moved on.

Final torpedo was loaded, U-95 came to periscope depth at 11.00 to find a heavy overcast and moderate fog had set in, as well as choppy seas. Sound had convoy ahead. Surfaced and headed for bearing,
as could maneuver on surface under cover of the fog and perhaps find a target for final torpedo.

Located in the fog a large 6000 ton merchant, turned for attack at 13.50. However, merchant spotted U-95 as closed and fired with a stern mounted 3 inch gun! U-95 raced away and submerged.

Soon out of the fog, came a destroyer heading right for us. Turned a few degrees to port to line up for a "down the throat " shot on destroyer. Speed was set to Fast, with Pistol to magnetic in case choppy seas caused torpedo to run deeper.

At 700 meters, fired final torpedo from Tube No.5, TI G7a.
The C/D class destroyer, attempted to avoid by turning to port to allow torpedo pass alongside. Torpedo passed alongside the starboard but when just about amidships, it detonated, as it was close enough to trigger magnetic pistol. Destroyer erupted in a fireball and appeared to go out of control as it was moving at high speed and went into two circles before losing way, then heading off to the NorthEast profusely burning and listing.

In spite of fog, the large fires and smoke clouds remained visible at some distance. Soon another destroyer arrived in area, went to 100 meters to avoid. This destroyer never located U-95.

After some time, returned to periscope depth, no ships were visible except the smoke plume from the burning destroyer in the distance, estimated 3000-5000 meters. Closed to observe the burning vessel.

At 14.13, observed the destroyer sink rapidly by the bow. Soon after, spotted
in the fog what appeared t be a large tanker or merchant. While seas were choppy, they were calm enough for use of deck gun. Surfaced for gun action,
cautious to make sure target did not have a deck gun as the freighter encountered earlier did. This tanker was unarmed, and thus commenced firing from 1000 meters.

Loaded tanker quickly burned and exploded. Multiple waterline hits
sealed her fate. 8,300 ton tanker sunk in Grid AL 36. A destroyer was spotted emerging from the fog, U-95 submerged , went to silent routine,
destroyer dropped a few, but never came close to U-95.

Surfaced at 22.30 hours. All cleared. With fuel down to 25 percent and all torpedoes expended. Set course for Lorient for a uneventful passage.

Entered the Bay of Biscay on 2 November, 59th day of the patrol. That morning made two dives to avoid British aircraft, bombed once by twin engine. In the afternoon, just 90 KM from Lorient, another twin engine aircraft appeared. Ordered AA gun manned and set the plane on fire. However, it's bomb found its mark, hitting U-95 just forward of conning tower. Most topside were killed, a few injured. Boat quickly began to sink, in spite of best efforts, massive flooding throughout all forward compartments and conning tower/control room. As U-95 slide under, the aircraft crashed into the water.

U-95 sank to the bottom and crashed at 110 meters, unable to surface, she was doomed. ( I rarely every joust with aircraft, habit from TMO. I was not aware dark waters aircraft, esp in 1940 were deadly . Will not repeat this mistake. Killed on first patrol, which started out great)

Love the effects of this mod...the oil slick after the sub sunk which was above my sinking location and moved if sub moved. The deck hatch which closes when dive, opens when surface.

Final Total for patrol:

Two merchants, three tankers, one destroyer sunk.

39,657 tons.

Dark Waters
March 20, 1943
North Atlantic Convoy Lanes.
U-409 Type VIIC
100 difficulty map contacts off, cam on

Probably my best submerged attack on convoy in Dark Waters so far.
Managed to get inside convoy submerged. One torpedo, one ship. Fired four TII G7e bow torpedoes, sunk two ships outright, another followed.

Fourth, the ship slowed and torpedo hit the bow of Type A Hog Island Freighter, nearly blowing it off. Switched to stern tube to hit a ship close crossing stern. While plotting its speed, raised scope for next mark when could hear the sounds of ship very close, quickly scanned around with scope to see the mangled bow of the freighter filling the lens(!) Seems although severely damaged, she decided to come over to ram our scope. Ordered
down scope and emergency dive to 25 meters but it was too late.

U Boat shook, groaned, noises of steel colliding, then damage reports piled in as lights flicked on and off. The freighter had rammed our boat , which pushed us for a time from 12 meters to 20.

The ramming caused severely damage to propulsion room and control room bulkhead, with heavy flooding, blew ballast and surfaced at full speed, hoping to survive long enough to pump water and try for some escape.

Also, with one torpedo left and the vessel that just rammed us astern...fired stern tube from 400 meters, hitting the Hog Island Type aim amidships, blowing large visible hull in the vessel...revenge for the ramming.

As raced through the convoy on surface, fighting flooding and heavy seas, took gunfire. Nothing large hit but some machine gun fire from a nearby merchant hit us. Used AA guns to sweep the deck of the freighter from 900 meters. Must have killed gunners as gunfire ceased.

Progress was made during this time, as damage control pumped some water from control room, but propulsion room was full and weighing down the boat, which was riding at 6-7 meters in water.
A destroyer was spotted astern, jogging in and out among the columns trying to catch the U boat.

However, at 1306, in spite of some water pumped, U Boat sunk from the surface . Blew ballast, tried everything could, including blowing ballast repeatedly until tanks dry, but unable to surface. Descent was slowed at 200 meters by water being pumped from control room but propulsion room remained flooded and unable to stop the descent. Passed 260 meters...off the gauge and a few minutes later, hit crush depth.

Few shots, happened fast so was not able to get the moment I was rammed in screenshot, just immediate aftermath.

Default Sunk but still on the surface

Screen shot of a Soviet frigate whom i torpedoed.

she is sunk and i received credit however when i was re-traversing the area this shocked the H out of me.

so, she took enough damage for SH4 to classify her as sunk and yet she is as much on the surface as she would be if she was still patrolling.

interesting damage model to say the least.

WEATHER

Weather in area was mostly clear and calm, with
a few days of high winds and light fog. Weather in transit
to and from base was almosy yachting weather majority of time.

NAVIGATIONAL AIDES

No navigational aides were spotted in area, aside
from the atolls themselves. Blackout conditions
appeared to be observed on the islands.

MINES

No mines were encountered on this patrol.

RADIO

Radio function was normal throughout the patrol.

RADAR

SD radar appeared to function correctly. However,
no aircraft were encountered on this patrol.

SOUND GEAR AND CONDITIONS

Sound gear functioned well overall,
detecting contacts in excess of 10,000 yards
in some cases.

Sound conditions in area were overall satsisfactory.

THERMAL LAYERS

No thermal layers were
detected.

ANTISUBMARINE COUNTERMEASURES AND EVASION

Assigned area was patrolled by one or more Destroyers
and several small patrol craft or auxiliary type Subchasers.

Enemy destroyer encountered was equipped with active sonar
as evidenced by it's pinging. However, aside from initial
attack once TRITON was at 250 ft, enemy appeared
to have lost contact.

Evasion was conducted by rigging for silent running
and evading at test depth of 250 ft.

MAJOR DAMAGE AND DEFECTS

Damage

All damage repaired at sea unless indicated
otherwise.

1. Forward Batteries
Depth charge attack of 20 December 1941 caused serious damage
to Forward Batteries. One, possibly two depth charges exploded
forward to starboard at estimated 50-100 feet distance.

Upon completion of repairs, it was found forward batteries could not gain
full charge, with just seventeen percent of their capacity. This limited
submerged endurance and performance, with aft batteries carrying the load.

After several days, forward batteries began to fail, with recharge
capacity falling to just thireen percent.

2. Leaks-Forward Torpedo Room.

3. Torpedo Tube No.1

4. Torpedo Tube No.2

5. Torpedo Tube No.3

6. Torpedo Tube No.4

7. Torpedo Tube No.5

PERSONNEL

Crew performance throughout patrol was excellent with
strong morale in spite of trying circumstances.

HEALTH AND HABITABILITY

Conditions onboard were overall comfortable
with climate maintained and well prepared meals.
Relatively short duration of patrol also helped
maintain conditions onboard.

REMARKS

A key enemy outpost, there was a surprising lack of merchant shipping encountered
in the Marshall Islands, in the Kwajalein area in particular. Perhaps further
time spent in area would have located enemy shipping.

Lack of enemy air patrols was also surprising. With war now declared,
it is likely enemy will reinforce the islands.

Torpedo performance was concerning as at least
four out of six fired out of six fired prematurely detonating.
Two of these explosions were confirmed visually when
torpedoes detonated in succession just 20-30 yards from
the destroyer they were on solid track to impact. These malfunctions
cost the sinking of one, perhaps two enemy warships.

Since I've started to play I have found that I love SH4, though I do admit it has some... quirks. Things like escorts running around like chickens with their heads cut off and not actually trying to protect their flock allowing me to just stay at periscope depth and pick ships off. Also the utter plethora of aircraft flying around and running into three Task Forces of two to three Hiryu class, a Shokaku, and various escort carriers, cruisers and the like. Hell supposedly I got the MOH on first patrol of one career attempt, though the medal was utterly wrong. All settings except manual TDC and map were clicked so realism was 75 percent.

So I looked at mods available and fell in love with the Idea of Trigger Maru Overhauled and applaud Decimus and all who helped them.

So I am getting used to TMO and I love it though I have a much harder time hitting a target I admit. Last night I managed to get past the escorts and while I never saw the merchies in the pouring rain I did see a Mogami Class Heavy Cruiser. Managed to sink her after using all 8 torps (not proud of that) to do so then went deep. Got a hell of a shellacking and spent the next few real life hours sneaking away. Tonight I have to finish my patrol with no working tubes and just deck gun any single merchies I manage to find. I've managed to get two so far, but still have over a day left of being on station before I should get a complete... then I am heading home without giving a status report. Feel kinda useless as a vulnerable "gunboat".

I do admit I find it funny that I got a radio report of me delivering ammo and getting spare parts, torps, and refugees from Corregidor. Took me a bit to work out that it wasn't new instructions, just a message using a random sub and happened to use the one I was in. I also received a message about all Asiatic boats were to base out of Fremantle, yet I am still showing Surubaya as my base of operations.

...

So for stories, this is more of a memory. When I was young my sire got me hooked on Submarines and the Navy. We had a C128 and Silent Service. He created authentic looking (at least to me)patrol sheets and had manila folders with colored tabs that you could slide paper into. You named your Sub then you did patrols. After each patrol you had to fill out a patrol report.

If you lost your Sub it was "stricken from the record" a new name was slid into the tab and the patrol reports from your sub were put into an "Archive".

Between that and books like, "Wake of the Wahoo", "Silent Victory", "Sink 'em All", "Iron Coffins", and while fictional, "Das Boot", and "Final Harbor". Final Harbor was why I would usually name my Subs U.S.S Mako.

And while Movies like "Run Silent Run Deep" and "Das Boot" were staples of my childhood, I find it funny that when things like Mogami Class Heavy Cruisers are mentioned that I think more of "They were Expendable." Hmm... I wonder if there is a PT Boat Simulator out there.
