I probably should have ordered a contamination suit before the body armour!

Hong Kong’s leading epidemiologist: Coronavirus could infect 60% of global population if unchecked.
Quote:
The coronavirus epidemic could spread to about two-thirds of the world’s population if it cannot be controlled, according to Hong Kong’s leading public health epidemiologist.

His warning came after the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said recent cases of coronavirus patients who had never visited China could be the “tip of the iceberg”.

Prof Gabriel Leung, the chair of public health medicine at Hong Kong University, said the overriding question was to figure out the size and shape of the iceberg. Most experts thought that each person infected would go on to transmit the virus to about 2.5 other people. That gave an “attack rate” of 60-80%.

Yes 60%, IF left unchecked. But I'd wager we have a fairly good grasp on the situation, so far. That 18% CFR presented earlier is in my opinion due to Chinese government leaving things left unchecked at the outset. 2% CFR is probably closer to what can be achieved when proper quarantine and treatment is administered by competent authority. Though 2% is still too much considering the entire ordeal would have been prevented if Chinese officials could better regulate what the hell people can eat over there.

disclaimer: these are just my happy thoughts hehe

While his video is incorrect, unsanitary Chinese seafood and live animal markets are responsible for this virus and the 2003 SARS outbreak. In many ways, China is still third-world. And yes, they still eat dogs and cats there. Stating facts has nothing to do with bigotry.

Saw for the first time here three people wearing surgical facemasks. I would say all three were Asian. Interesting most people ignore them but a few avoided them walking around a table in the bookshop I was in.

An additional 40 people have been confirmed infected aboard Diamond Princess.
Quote:
Another 39 people have tested positive for the coronavirus on the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan as well as one quarantine officer, bringing the total to 175, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

Maybe they should rename the ship Virus Princess.

Cruise of a Lifetime would not be a good marketing shtick right now. Damn, this gets more worrying by the day.

The most troubling thing is that all 2,700 passengers disembarked in Okinawa before the ship headed to Yokohama. Many were already infected at that time, but didn't know it yet.

So why didn't the people in Okinawa get sick yet?

Spells someone on the ship, a crewman perhaps, has the virus or somehow the ship's air supply system has been compromised and is still spreading the disease.

Good question. Chances are at least several others were infected. Perhaps they are not showing symptoms yet, or maybe they are but haven't gone to the hospital for fear of being quarantined. We just don't know yet.

Furthermore, scientists believe the incubation period can last up to 14 days, plus they believe the virus can survive outside the body for up to 9 days (especially on metal surfaces). So, from the time one person starts to show symptoms until the next person becomes (indirectly) infected by touching a surface contaminated by the first infected person and later starts to show symptoms, we're looking at up to 40 days maximum between confirmed infections.

Think of it this way:

On February 1st, a man becomes infected with coronavirus. He shows no symptoms until February 14 (14 days later), when he comes down with a fever. Thinking he has influenza, he goes to the drugstore for some cold medicine. While shopping, he sneezes into his hand, and then touches the shopping cart handle. On February 23 (9 days later), I go to the same drugstore for some toilet paper, and by chance, get the same shopping cart. While pushing the cart, I get the virus on my hands. When I get home, I forget to wash my hands before eating. I am now infected. I show no symptoms until March 8 (14 days later), when I too come down with a fever. By then, I have possibly infected some of my family members, co-workers, friends, or complete strangers. I may even indirectly infect them through contaminated surface contact 9 days later after I first start showing symptoms.

The above example with maximum incubation periods and surface survival rates is of course not probable, but rather possible to show what a worse-case scenario could look like .
