Not always. I.e., with the 1366/768 gui I use I replaced the binocular file with the stock one and it works fine. Just swapped the .tga files.

You can specify exactly which file it is

In this particular mod the files "Binocular.tga" and "_BinocMap.tga" found in path data\menu\gui.
Copy\paste those into the same path as your install. May or may not work but worth a try.
