Never played Homeworld. I've played Sins of Solar Empire. A very good game and it seems to be somewhat similiar to Homeworld.

Sins and Homeworld don't have all that much in common, HW is more of an story driven "C&C without base building in space" game. Sins is more of an 4x game.
