The Jewel Voice Broadcast, also known as the Imperial Rescript, was a monumental moment in the history of the Japanese Imperial Throne; the Emperors for centuries were only seen and not heard by the common population in Japan; even among the highest levels of the government and military, very, very few ever heard the Imperial voice; it was common and demanded etiquette if the Emperor was present at a meeting, he was not spoken to directly and he did not respond directly; it some cases he actually sat behind a semi-transparent screen and he would respond or comment by whispering to his aide or writing notes to be read aloud; prior to the Rescript, Hirohito had only spoken openly once, when early discussions were being held about an attack on Pearl Harbor and Hirohito, concerned about the implication of such an action asked that other alternatives to war be pursued, if possible; Hirohito's openly spoken request so shocked the military and civilian authorities preset they postponed the original plan, but, ultimately, Pearl Harbor happened ; the Jewel Voice Broadcast was a huge culture shock to the Japanese peop;e and they were awestruck the Emperor would speak directly to them on the radio; loudspeakers were set up all throughout Japan for those who did not have access to radios so all could hear; when Hirohito was announced most got down on their knees and bowed towards the radios or loudspeakers; the fact Hirohito personally spoke to the Japanese people rather just having some subordinate deliver the speech or just publishing the text is credited with motivating thr Japanese people to peacefully accept the US Occupation; Gen. MacArthur was very grateful for the Rescript and made special efforts to secure the preservation of the Imperial family structure within the new democratic postwar government...
