Default Transfer old saves from disc version

I haven't played SH4 in many years, sadly. But seeing videos of Silent Depth 2 recently brought back the old American ww2 sub sim bug back in me, and I have been thinking of my options.
I have the game on my old laptop, and am wondering if it's possible to transfer that at all (have since upgraded PC several times).
If so, is there a way to play it without the disc (it's in storage with a whole bunch of other things). Also, is there a way to transfer save files to the Steam version (if I were to purchase that)?

Lastly, I had the Narwhal mod on my old saves (my favourite American boat of the war). Would that still work too?

Many thanks!

Is there anyone who may have solutions for the questions raised?
Would be very much appreciated!

You can copy Saved data from one computer to another, ~BUT~ You must make certain that the mod load-out AND the drive / folder structure is exactly the same. ie: Game was in "C:\Games \SH4 WotP" with the save, and on the new computer, you must use the same exact folder structure. Same with the Save file. You can run into massive differences in the file paths between different versions of Windows, so you are dealing with a potential minefield of issues...

Save files all go to SH4 in "my documents" folder. Did you have wolves of the pacific (the 1.5 addon?) If not then just the first download at steam would be applicable to you, other wise you need the wolves of the pacific also. I recommend getting both, most of the modern mod require 1.5
