...clearly, the 'Achilles tendon' of the 21st century...throw in the mod issues of WIN 11 persistently trying to upgrade, I'll stick with WIN 10...even if it'll no longer "be supported"... Just the innumerable travellers stuck in airport terminals around the planet is insufferable...due to one little untested 'upgrade'! No wonder they call the errant company: Crowdstrike?!! '

You aren't the only one wondering. I thought they test the software before releasing it.

yes, the normal way is to deploy update first to test machines and run all required tests to check it is safe for production environment.

The damages rank in the billions, and lives in hospitals can go/will go /have gone lost.

It would be a surprise if no suing takes place.

Compare all this to my thread "Thee years old..." about Windows 11. Always Online enforced, you cannot boot offline. Microsoft Cloud usage enforced. With "Recall" just delayed, not ruled out, every 5 seconds a screen snapshot saved - while Windows constantly phones home somewhere, total surveillance of all your activities, websites, visible codes entered, etc. Your screen printed out every five seconds. An unbelivably precious through of personally sensitive data. Your activities. What porn sites you surfed. What dark net sites you surfed. What consent buttons you clicked. The illegal items you bought. Your Pins, if you deactivated the non-visible feature.

Let me ask you a simple, innocent quesiton (and I know that especially Americans are described to be most naive when it comes to be protective about their personal data and private sphere when being online). Here is the question: do you trust Microsoft to mean it well ?

A fool who still does not find the only correct answer all by himself.

You really want Windows 11?

Windows 11 is so totalitarian that the user shares are DECLINING, people using it actively reject it already. After three years its shares are 18.x %, dropping.

Add to this the slow dying of many PC game studios. "Personal" Computers are dead, if Microsoft has its way. Imagine lets say 70% of user using Windows 11 - and being unable to boot due to a catastrophe like yesterday. Hundreds of thousands of small businesses who do not maintain their own IT departement needing advice, and not getting some. Communication breaking down, since this also often is depending on Windows servers.

I remember an incident from several years ago, maybe ten years ago or so. Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware published a definition update that broke Windows boot sequences, the computers did not boot anymore. Hundreds of thousands were affected. I was one of them, for one and a half day, as I recall it, I was unable to use my PC and did not know what to do and where to get help, and how to deal with this. I must admit that I forgot how I solved it, but although they released a workaround, a corrected definition file, soon, I was out for over one day, and had no clue of anything. I seem to recall that I also had to change something in the BIOS or had to boot from an alternative boot medium to make the update correctly accepted. Well, many office workers and small company owners do not know stuff like that, do not know where to get help, have no admin in their service. Halleluja! Since then I load updates not several times per day, but only once per week. I'm no high probability target for a targetted attack, I reduced the likelihood to get hit by another bad update mess again, chances are that I will just miss it.

WINDOWS MUST BE KILLED. Its high time, its becoming a real existential danger, and Micrtosoft claims way too much control over our lives and privacy and business secrets. Add to the combination of Windows 11 totalitarianism and the "big" incident yesterday the fact that AI now takes more and more control, reducing reaction times further where humans can intervene, and doing more and more its own thing. I came to a conclusion of that the risks now by far outweigh the gains.

You really have a problem with your lack of imagination how realistic and real and extreme the danger from all this has become. Will not become in the future - but already is right now. We do not overwatch it in full, and we have no realistic idea of what is coming at us. WE ARE UNPREPARED FOR THIS.

The IT failure yesterday is said to have been the worst in all history, and it was caused by human failure. There will allways be human failures in form of unwanted, but real accidents, and imperfection. We are humans. No matter how tight your procedures are designed, there will be failures. Even with the nuclear weapons and mutual deterrance of the cold war there were mistakes taking place and human failures in decision making. We were not fail-safe, we did not survive due to our abilities and skills - we just were LUCKY.

How much else must happen before you people start understanding that the dependency on one single company - Microsft - has led way too far...? Microsoft does not do quality stuff, since many years. They get away with their mediocrity and lousy QC only for one reason: the software and hardware compatability reigning above all gives them a de facto monopole.

Add to it the terrible abo models for software today, may it be Microsoft, may it be Adobe. Adobe claims that work results you do with their software are no longer your intellectual property, but theirs, and they just give you an infinite license to lease from them these your fruits of your own labour and creativity. One field of interest is they want all that stuff to train AIs - but its not the only reason.

Microsoft must be killed. Like Windows. The US government will not like this, but the world must get rid of this sh!t. It has become way too totalitarian, way too total in control and surveillance, way too exposing your data and compromisng privacy protection, way too powerful in all regards. And at the same time way too lousy in technical quality (admins say Windows 11 gives them even more troubles than Vista, 8 and 10 gave them. That says something, if you know how error-ridden Windows 10 was and is. Six years ago I sometimes quoted form a tech blog on Windows 10, you remember? Admins HATED Windows 10 already back then. They have not learnt more love with W11. And Windows 11 does not work faster, does not do stuff better than Windows 10. Quality and speed were not the reasons why Microsoft released Windows 11 after it told the world that Windows 10 would be the last OS release ever. Customers do not benefit from it. Why else then?

Kill Windows. Kill Microsoft. Say No. - What else must happen to make you use your brain?

Hint: Linux Mint 22 is about to get launched any day now. It will get supported with security updates until 2029. this is a good time to make the change, if you already thought about going to Linux. If you are private and special software/hardware compatabilities are not your concern, dare to check it out its easier than you think. In fact it does many things BETTER than Windows. With the Cinnamon desktop, you need almost never the command line interface (terminal). the community is a mixed bag, some are very helpful, some are quite elitist and haughty, but you will get help one way or the other, there are so many sources and forums. And again, Mint Cinnamon was designed with the idea to make the change from windows to Linux for Windows users as simple as possible. Thats why it is the most popular Linux distribution.
