PK help, I’m rusty!
Hey all,
As a big fan of the O’Kane method, I don’t use the PK much. That said, I had an encounter where a merchant turned late and only one of my fish hit on the initial attack. After he went a little squirly he settled back down on a steady course and I was still in good enough position for a slow Mk14 shot close to zero gyro and about a 120 degree track angle from about 3,300 yds. In the moment I thought engaging the PK was the way to go (but now realizing that I prob could instead setup for another constant bearing attack, just at the less than ideal setup angles). Anyway, now I want to figure out my PK issue. Daylight attack so using sonar only I replotted a few marks to confirm course, speed, and AOB. Setup the TDC, turn on PK, then continued sending range and bearing via sonar multiple times until right up to firing. Popped up the scope and sent 2 slows his way. I tried the setup twice and both times I missed waaaay aft. After the second time I looked closer at the TDC and noticed that the bearing to target on the TDC was way behind what sonar was calling out. So in that moment I again I tried sending range and bearing to the TDC. Range updated, but bearing remained 7 degrees behind what sonar was calling out. Clearly there’s a step or logic flaw I’m missing on getting the correct bearing to the TDC via sonar only. Any thoughts? Thanks! ESPY (TMO 2.5 + OTC + RSRD) |

you did great right up to the point of firing. turn off the PK before your last bearing/distance/AOB check and then fire. if you have done everything correctly to that point you should get a hit. question: with the target zig-zagging, why not set the Mk14 to high speed?

Can you explain the reason for needing to turn off the PK? That seems counter-intuitive to me. Thanks! ESPY |

CTD - it's not just a job

The PK is "Position Keeper", so it remembers your first shot done with it set to "on"... turn it off, and then back on for the next shot, so that it updates the angles.

Ok, but this was my first shot with the PK. Missed part of a a non-PK shot, re-engaged attempting a PK shot…

I should have said "bearing / range measurement... If you do not "Lock" on the target, and turn on PK, the PK will remember the last set of data input to it. You move the scope, but the angles don't change. If you don't engage the PK, the angles will change when you move the scope... if you do engage the PK, you could move your scope for your next measurement, turn the PK off, then turn it back on and it would update the angles, but you have to shoot when you turn on the PK in that situation, else don't turn it back on, or you'll have that set of bearing stuck in the TDC... I said that in about twice (at least) the words needed... sigh - sorry.

In this attempt I was locked on the target and was sending range and bearing from sonar while PK was ON. Do I have to turn off the PK to send updates to it? |
