Zig Zag
If a convoy is zig zagging 20 degrees off its base course and the ships are travelling at ten knots what is the true speed of advance of the convoy? This is for a bit of historical research.

Its variable, depending onhow long every zig and every zag is maintained.

Thank you for the replies. It was an Italian convoy I was interested in moving at ten knots. The escorts had limited asdic and radar. They relied mostly on hydrophones and launching depth charges regularly to discourage attacks.

....those braggart, always 'rounding up" Italians; their convoys never exceeded 9.5 knots either!
