Default Why does it take so many torpedo's

Why does it usually take so many torpedos to sink one ship?
I have set the torpedos depth to 6.2 meters for large tankers,5.8 meters for merchants and 2.5-3 meteres for small tankers.

It's not very often that I can sink a ship with just one torpedo.
On most sinkings for a large merchant I have to use 2 or 3 torpedos and for a large tanker it has taken 4 torpedoes.

I have tried to line up with the stern of any ship & take out their props,do this for as many ships as I can, then surface at a distance of 1-3 miles then shell the ships, but this is not always possible when the convoys hang around or the escorts hover around or the distance stretches over many miles.

Is it possible to set the torpedos to have a more realistic effect or even better one shot = one kill?

Thanks in advance

I usually set my torpedo depth to match the ship's listed draft and use magnetic exploders. That does much more damage than hitting the side of the hull.

Thank you for replying. I have been told that there is a book(somewhere in the SH5 sim) that shows the draft of each type of ship, but for the life of me I could never find it.

I had set my torpedos as magnetic exploders & varying depths.

You should try.

Do you use any mods? Damage model is very different depending on whether we're talking about unmodded or modded game. I didn't play unmodded game much but from what I recall flooding is way too nerfed there requiring you to drain ships hitpoints to zero to kill it.

Ah if it's stock game then I understand. You should try The Wolves of Steel Mod, it's simple to install and include most must have mods. The problem is that you will have to start a new career probably.

Another thing to remember & bear in mind... that historically, they did suffer from some real bad issues with certain torps, heck... even the U.S. fleetboats, dealt with their own issues on the Mk XIV torps... & one other one, will have to Redig back through research... but... suffice it to say, that was modeled into the sim... I believe.

Though not greatly, as modders have had to iron & hammer those aspects out, to the best of their ability & quite well... I might add.

To the point that I've felt a great deal of frustration, watching a planned out attack, go to hades in a hurry, watching torps premature explode, not go off, run deeper than set... all those nice... loverly pains in the aft torp tube issues...

Main point is here... to keep that in mind, on why & how come it often takes more torps, than what you think should be used to down a target.

I will admit, when you sink a target, with 1 shot... or just the right # of them, that you figure it should take to do the job... it is a sweeeeetttt feeling.

Any who... hope this helps...

I used to have a fair few WW2 autobiographies, some signed, until my wife decided to have a clearout & threw them away while I was at work, the books were by both British & German air & naval crews of many ranks.,they would have been worth a packet now.

I had one by Otto Kretschmer(u-99) telling about his combat patrols and U99's sinking by Captain Walker(RN).
I remember reading about the dud torpedos & how the crews were frustrated by this after stalking a convoy or single ship only for the torpedo to hit the ship and just banged against it.

I wasnt bothered by the value of the books( I had been offered £300 for them) What bothered me was that I loved to read them time & time again & the history that they contained.
