RL Tabletop Subsim Gaming
A bit of a random question, does anyone here play those tabletop games, like the one UBOAT is based on? As in real life ones with pieces and other humans in the room?
I just wondered what kind of other 'sims' folk play. I asked on the FB page but the audience here is a lot wider!

ewww play games with other humans?
You mean actually interacting with *people*? (honestly, I don't understand where people come up with this stuff)

Played cosims in my youth, but cosims in Germany are suspicious, so I lacked playing partners and focussed mainly on solo play. Third World War series by GDW worked well that way, the Strike games by Victory Game less so. The Assault games by GDW I wanted to like, but there were unpassable limitations. Thank God the first Steal Beasts was published not much time later. Flight Leader by Avalon Hill was another darling game, I mean I belong to the generation watching Top Gun in the cinemas, so how not to like this game?
Only very rarely I was able to play with/against human players. There were dedicated solo games, Ambush!, and Tokyo Express (which I reviewed for Subsim.com: LINK). The "AI" system in Tokyo Express worked surprisignly good and was elegant in design, I still think good of that system. Still a lot of management work, but not as bad as Gulf Strike and Aegean Strike, their workload was incredible. Oh, I forgot, the Fleet series by Victory Games, I had the Atlantic and the Mediterranean module, these handled quite well in solo play although not being designed for that. I liked them: greetings from Red October on the big screen... I still have them all, somewhere. And I wish somebody would turn Flight Leader into a 1:1 computer conversion with good AI. I would pay a fortune for that. However, my by far biggest tabletop love is chess , but I have lost competence in it. Too many years with too little game practice.

I still play the 1964 Avalon Hill Gettysburg boardgame (with divisions) and Fury in the West in (brigades), a very accurate rendition of the bloodbath at Shiloh. What's more fun though, are the actual large-scale reenactments I participated in at those two battlefields in the '80's. My entire group filled 3 airliners to attend and went as one Federal regiment at the 1988 Gettysburg a huge affair with 30,000 spectators; 15,000+- combatants Temperatures for 4 days were in the 90's ...brutal in ol'time wool uniforms with full field gear!

I have jumped into the cold water and bought that Flight Command 2 title, it seems to base on Flight Leader by Avalon Hill. From that video I take that the AI is quite challenging and the interface to enter player's moves is practically the boardgame's way of handling the gameplay, just in different visual style. Shipment of the CD will take some time, I expect, and whether or not customs duties jump in I will see, but if they read my message, they may provide me a download link earlier, too.
I'll let you know. It would be blast if this is Flight Leader Boardgame in disguise, so to speak. i hoped for that since years and years. And then they made it already 28 years ago...? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_Commander_2

Wowh - some enthusiastic players even improve a good boardgame further:

looks like some of the stuff we did with Richthofen's War.
Really enjoyed playing that game. Unfortunately, at the time it was hard to find other WWI air war geeks to play with.

It sadden me that we live so far from each other. If we did we could have arranged a monthly meeting, Saturday and play some type of Board game.
Could be real fun playing with friends and eat some good food. We start the evening with some delicious food then we fight each other in a chosen board game. Just a crazy idea Markus
