The tail does not show the bearing (to the target), it shows the reverse of the course.
Also, if they are radio reports then they are static and fade away after some time. They do not appear with any fixed regularity, and are likely random or intermittent intervals. So the 4-bearing method won't work for that. It is better to use hydrophone or visual bearings for that. (but with the later you can already track it, look at it's AOB) And for training purposes that tail would be useful to verify how well you are doing it. But yeah, there are ways to hide the tail. Already mentioned.
