Oh, with the points you gain, can the points be used for upgrades to the crew or the boat??

The points don't do anything like that. I believe the points are mainly (if not completely) intended for multiplayer scoring. For example, if both sides fulfill their main objectives, who got the most points (perhaps from non-critical objectives)? They're the winner.
