Default Caught on Video: Rogue Wave Hits Ship

Watch as a Royal Navy warship gets hit by a massive wave to the bow. You can see the damage to the railing after it recedes. As far as I know, they weren't badly damaged but it just shows what can happen out there.

Brings back a vivid memory from way back in the late seventies when I was aboard a 20,000 ton merchantman in the middle of a heavy storm (Indian Ocean) I decided to leave the engine room and have a cigarette with a fellow officer on the bridge (Deck Officer)

We were watching the waves occasionally breaking over the forecastle, upon which were a car and cabin cruiser heavily lashed down. These were owned by one of the shipping lines directors and had been allowed to hitch a ride back to our intended destination in Europe (Antwerp if I remember correctly).

So here we were up on the bridge enjoying a smoke whilst watching the storm when my colleague said something along the lines of "Look at this massive wave approaching". I watched as it completely engulfed the forecastle for what appeared like an age and as the ship brought her nose back to the surface the car and cabin cruise were nowhere to be seen.

The Captain told us a few days later that the losses weren't covered by the cargo indemnity insurance because strictly speaking they shouldn't have been there in the first place.

That was bad, but just for arm chair sailors.

I've been in and seen worse especially around Cape Hatteras where me and the trash can became real good friends

I seem to recall some monster wave hit a cruise ship.

I remember they showed a clip from the ship in the news.

windows were smashed and other things

Sad thing is, I've been made sick by two foot swells when I went out in a small boat.... Nearly spewed all over one of my classmates. I am a lightweight.

On a more serious note, this reminds me of quite a few tragedies that took place near the places I've lived... in 1983 the "Marine Electric" went down in huge waves not far from my parents' house -31 dead and just three survivors. And where I live now, a fishing boat broke up in a storm recently with all three men lost....captain was a meth addict, and took her out in bad weather against advice. It can be awful out there, and combine the weather with bad maintenance or substance abuse? Often deadly.

It doesn't exactly scare me-Having a huge respect for this wet element I do have.

Seeing video clip like this-does not change my dream a bit (World Cruise)
