Icon9 Oh, woe is me for having bought SH5 in 2024.

Turns out, after 14

years, and with the latest patch just a bit younger, the base game is still playable on Windows 11. You can launch missions and sink ships—sometimes it even counts!

So, I started looking for community patches and found this nice place (hello, fellow sailors). I came across a whole bunch of guides on how to patch the game, explaining what should happen after using those patches, mods, and so on.

I found two ways, according to the guides here, that should "fix" my game.

  • I installed TDW and applied patches in it (except for the map colors—I didn’t feel like I needed new colors). Result: The game crashes when I press M. I did a clean install and tried again with the same setup. Now it crashes when I start the campaign.
Alright, well, let's try method 2: TWoS.
  • I followed the instructions in the file from pdf, but the installation didn’t go as planned. You either get an error with JSGME, or the game crashes when you try to launch the campaign(oh one time I skipped a line and got like 5000 errors each requiring to press a button...I held enter for about 15 minutes my fault).

So help me, Obi-Wan Kenobis of the deep seas! I need some bigger fish to help me explain the steps to get the game running and play through the campaign. You’re my salty hope!

To be honest, if you guys tell me Windows 11 is a dead end for this, that's okay. I have a Windows 7 laptop in the garage—I’ll just download a copy on it and see how it goes.

Welcome to SubSim ilerien!

Where do you have Silent Hunter installed?? It almost sounds like you might have chosen the "default" location of "Program Files'. Whether you have a Steam, Ubisoft, or other download or disk, you do not want to put the game in any folder under a Program Files folder, since Windows "protects" the folder from modification. If that is indeed the case, then un-install what you have now, and then re-install the game, but when you get to the Path dialog, edit that to point to a folder that you make yourself. As an example, a Steam install will show "C:\Program Files (x86) \Steam \SteamApps \common \Silent Hunter 5". Change that to read "C:\Games \Steam \SteamApps \common \Silent Hunter 5", changing just the first folder name, and you should then be able to get the TWoS install and TDW Editor to take and complete fully. Read the TWoS install instructions thoroughly though. There are a few important points that Vecko makes in the install...

You might also have to edit the SH5.exe file Properties for your display to treat it right. Navigate into the game folder after your re-install, right-click on the SH5.exe file, choose "Properties" from the context menu. On the "Compatibility" tab, you might have to change settings in there for the High DPI stuff... You could use this SH4 posting as an outline: https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/sho...72#post2918472
