First patrol no ships advice for newb
Just started this series and really like it. Does anyone have tips for a first patrol? Currently off Hartlepool and haven't seen anything except a patrol craft. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I am playing an unmodded SH3 and have not submerged yet. I have completed my patrol square AN41 and wanted to sink a merchant before heading home. My boat is a Type IIA

Monkey hangers not playing?
Not played vanilla in years. The mega-mods add a lot of small coastal traffic and patrol craft.
Firstly, has the war started? Your first patrol may be before September 3rd 1939. Secondly, keep a look out on the navigation map. Contacts (small squares) should appear on that fairly regularly in vanilla. Thirdly, to find ships it is best to submerge every hour or two to about 20m, stop the engines and use the hydrophone. Either wait for a minute so the soundman can report, or, better, use the H key and listen yourself. You can detect ships from a lot further away with that method. If you hear a ship surface and charge down the bearing. If you don't see anything in about 30 minutes submerge and repeat. Fourthly, head for a RN base. There's one at Rosyth near Edinburgh and of course there's always Scapa Flow in the Orkneys. You will be in shallow water, which makes evasion dificult, and keep a track of depth under keel to avoid crashing into the seabed if you dive too fast. You need patience to play this game. |
