Default I sank the wrong ship

I'm on the career campaign. My second patrol for the 1941 asiatic fleet start. It is around the 1st of May 1942. After completing a patrol objective in the Celebes sea with no targets, I set off in the direction of the Solomons to see if I could find action there. Cruising along about 300 miles North of Rabaul, I detect a ship. It is a merchant traveling alone, going North. I need to chase it to get in range. With no escorts to worry about, I can run on the surface until close to firing range, then submerge. I focus on getting to a good range and angle to fire torpedoes. The light is poor so can't see all the details. After getting in position, I fire 2 torpedoes at him from about 1500 yards. Torpedoes run straight ad true and get 2 hits. Yea! After waiting for a minute or 2 I look to see if I need to fire another torpedo. It is only then that I see the American flag. Dammit. Nothing I can do so I sail away back to my patrol route. The ship sinks before I leave the area.

I have not completed the mission yet due to difficulty finding merchants to sink (Japanese merchants). what damage to renown or other penalty will I see when I get back and dock? Also what was an American merchant doing alone in enemy waters. Not an excuse but just not what I expected.

it depends on the mod set you are playing.

When you play a mod like Dark Waters, OKM sends you messages just like the real thing which ships you can attack, what countries are off limits, and the confusing orders Hitler gave. the mod shows a list of flags and when they were allied or axis or neutral. I've made a few mistakes and ended up being taken away by the gestapo when I returned to port. I wasn't let off the hook like Lemp in U-30. Not sure on other mods when you would be relieved of command.

sinking the wrong ship could be really devastating to your career. you could be credited with a negative 5,000 renown which is almost unrecoverable in a single mission.

bad news, sports fans.
i am sure that this was a valuable lesson from which you will learn and not repeat.

I finally finished this patrol. I had been playing a couple of patrols on a different mod on another installation of SH4.
Found a couple of lone merchants to sink, then ran into a nice convoy. I did a save right after detecting the convoy which proved to be a very good idea. As I then messed up my first 2 approaches to the convoy. On the third try I slipped in between the front escort and the right side (starboard!) escort without getting detected, coming to periscope depth in the right place. I shot 2 torpedoes at each of 3 merchants, hitting all of them. Since no destroyers were bearing down on me yet, I also got off a stern tube shot at another ship before going deep and working my way out of the area. I believe I got credit for 2 of the ships sunk. I had a patrol objective to complete back in the Celebes Sea. While completing that I encountered 2 different solo ships, both were medium tankers. Both were easy targets, adding 10,000 tons to my success. Then returned back to Pearl Harbor to complete patrol.
I got no penalty at all. And for sinking 30,000 tons of merchants I got a medal for me and several of the crew. But the only upgrade I could make to the sub was to add the air search radar. Wish I could get the 4" deck gun. That 3-inch peashooter is almost useless.

But I definitely love the Gato sub

Another comment about the allied merchant ships popping up in strange places with no escort. I have seen them a few more times on different missions in the Southwest area. They almost always come up in bad weather of fog or driving rain with poor visibility. The kind of visibility where you have to get within 1000 yards or the flag is just a blank gray piece of cloth. Also the TDC refuses to lock on until very close as well.

Since I am now more cautious about this situation, I keep getting closer until I can see the flag. Resulting once in a near collision. Usually an American flag but twice I have seen what I think is an Australian flag.
