Default Newbie to SHIII and GWX 3.0

Hiya.

I just spent 3 hours installing vanilla SH3, updating it to Version 1.4 and then installing GWX 3.0. Finally did it by installing as Administrator and in the D: drive instead o C:\Program Files (x86)\... etc.

And I must say I am impressed with GWX 3.0. My laptop machine can't run Living Silent Hunter as it crashes. Anyway I would like to ask: as GWX is considered the ultimate super-mod for SHIII, what other must-have mods can I download and install to make SHIII even nicer and flashier and cooler than what it already is?

Hello,

I strongly recommend you try some of the GWX optional mods to begin with. There is also a high-resolution mod available to make the game work on aspect ratios other than 4:3. That is all I use most of the time.

Take a look at these two posts for more mod recommendations:

SH3 Commander would be first on my list. Be sure to add the GWX 3.0 config files for SH3 Commander in to Commanders config files overwriting the old ones. Then I would add Sailor Steve's ships name file to SH3 Commander.

P.S. Welcome Aboard!

Welcome to SubSim Frankie.

If you can't find what you need.... there's always someone around here that can pull it out of the hat. And this is THE best place to be for all things submarine related. Well, there's other stuff too but get the idea.

Hi Subsimmers

Some of you guys sound like you have eaten more sea salt than I have eaten rice. Thank you for your warm welcome and for the many all the links and recommendations of mods and GWX enhancements. I definitely will check them out.

BTW, my background is in Flight Sims and lately into SteelBeasts Pro PE. I am a guardian of the aged Digital Integration's Tornado flight simulator. DOS game and 1993(!) Game of the Year. I am a member of a Virtual Unit named Dogs Of War VU. Not quite yet a member of a wolf pack. Coming back to SteelBeasts, this is a game that has been around since 2000(!). And SH3 has been around since 2005 and STILL going strong. Wunderbar!

I think that gamers and modders are among the most patient people in the world because we are willing to spend hours to tweak a game or to get the installation right. LOL! I am amazed at the tons of mods on subsim.com. In fact, I even have SH4, SH4-addon for U-boats and SH5. But I would like very much to enjoy SH3 first because my laptop can handle it.

Also, yesterday I celebrated my father's 83rd birthday. He was the man responsible for making me a WW2 buff and a lover of all things war. I still remember reading his book on Gunther Prien's sinking of the HMS Royal Oak in Scapa Flow. For his birthday, I bought the Das Boot Directer's Cut 2-DVDs set. 3 hours of pure immersion. Pun intended. So anyway, I hope to play SH3 more these days in my spare time. The ultimate for me would be to (1) turn all settings to hardcore settings; (2) take out my pen, paper, protractor, ruler and compass and do manual plotting; (3) sink a ship using the old-fashioned manual mathematics way of targeting. The way the Commanders did it. Wow!!!! After that, the only thing left for me to do in my spare time is to build a mock-U-boat-submarine interior like the one Wolfgang Petersen built for the movie. Harharhar!

Now you're ready for the 5-hour Original, Uncut version.

welcome to subsim
well the gwx 3.0 is a great mod but there are some nice mods to add to it
that gives it a more hard hit and feel.
I will give you a few mod hints to when combined it gives a sweet look

here are the mods I would tell you about.

1 torpedo damage final version.

note this does not like sh4 but it beats sh3 dark damage smudge.

2 lifeboat mod

this gives floating reckage and people in life rafts crying for help.

3 gwx 30 graphic mod

this mod adds extra explosions smoke fire oil slicks dead bodies some floating in blood

these are my top 3 mod favorites
but it may slow up your pc a bit but they do give the gwx 30 mod a real feel.

the modders of these mods out done them selves hats off to these people.
