No problem here, richardphat. You're forgiven.

It's my opinion that part of what forums are for is to ask questions. It's not as much of a pet peeve with me if someone asks a question that has been asked and answered a hundred times before.

Sometimes people get jaded and crotchety in their old (internet) age. :p

To answer your query:

Free 3D Modeling Software

Blender - A very well made open source modeling and animation app that is
comparable to the stuff you pay for, such as Maya and 3D Studio MAX.
Excellent support and many addons available.

Wings3D - Here at Subsim, this is the most popular choice of free 3D apps. Not
as mature and loaded with features as Blender, but it still does the job
well with an easier learning curve.

Anim8or - A freeware modeling and animation app with a large community of
users.Intended for beginner-intermediate level artists but don't let its
simple interface fool you as it is very capable of creating impressive
effects. It also has excellent support and many extras.

OpenFX - A former commercial product, known as Soft F/X, it was released as open
source a few years ago with major improvments incorporated since then.
Built for Windows, using MS Visual Studio, it offers plugins, image maps,
and more.

DAZ Studio - A freeware 3D modeling app offered by DAZ 3D, the same company
that makes Bryce and Carrara. DAZ Studio creates very impressive
effects and many free models and other resources are available but the
really good stuff you have to pay to get.

K-3D - Yet another fine, open source 3D modeling and animation app. I don't know a
great deal about it, as I have never used it, but it has more plugins than you
could ever want and a thriving community.

Free Image Editing/Creation Software
You will need something to create textures for your models, won't you?

The GIMP - What can I say about this venerable, open source graphics app? It's
been around forever and is every bit as good as Photoshop, some say
better.

ImageMagick - Another open source image editing app. Supports over 100 different
image formats. It's a command-line tool, but there have been several
very good GUI frontends made for it.

Project Dogwaffle 1.2 - The freeware version pf PD 2.0, a paint and animation app. It has some limits, such as only using a max of two layers and saving your work in just .bmp or .tga format but it still has many useful features. Also has a free SDK, should you feel like creating your own plugins.

IrfanView - One of the absolute best, all-around tools for viewing and simple editing
of images. Also works as a media player and can use Adobe Photoshop
plugins. It supports a mind-boggling array of formats. A must have even
if you only use it for converting image formats and watching videos or
playing music/sounds.

I hope this helps you find the tools that suit you best for modeling ships and other things for SH3!

Well, it's not my thread but I want to thank you, GP. I had thought of trying my hand a modelling, but not really seriously. Now I have downloaded a good number of those programs and am having fun with the manuals. I should actually be trying something soon.

very good programs all.
Only reason I have 3DS Max 9 is someone else paid 90% of the price.

I was not very good a year ago.
Still not where I'd like to be yet.

JU-88 is pretty good.
Perhaps he could do a simple 'HOW TO'?

Then there's Thunder.
I KNOW he can teach us a thing or two.

Sailor Steve, I'm very happy to know the info I provided was such a big help and has gotten you started on modeling.

Maybe you can create a VIID U-boat model and privateer could add the nodes and whatnot to make it a playable boat complete with working mine launchers.

privateer, do you know of anything, up to and including blackmail, that we could use to have Thunder post tutorials?

Your own modeling work on that helicopter was very well done, IMHO.

I still wouldn't mind seeing a few "How-To" threads from your impressive mental library of modding knowledge.

I think I'll paste the info from my above post into the sticky for the Mods and Utilities, in hopes that it will make the big list.

VIID done.

Tomi_099 already built one. All that is missing is deployable exploding mines. He has a theory on what to do with the mines, but he needs some help. If you want to try it out check my filefront site under Tomiwork

You'll find the VIID alpha build. Works with stock and GWX 1.3, Not with GWX 2.1 yet.

As Thunder contacted me as a totally unknown?
I was a bit reserved at first, but polite.
What he told me in his first PM kind of made me
say 'Yea, right.'
I can not explain how glad I am that I did not blow him off!!!
If he did nothing but post how to's?
you would all go nuts!!
And to state it here and now for all to see.
Thunder does the main animations.
I do the imports and final placements and timeing.
I use a totally Alpha tool created by Master Ref.
If not for Ref's tool?
There would be no new animations.
So all mods using the new animations require credits to
Ref.

He's my Idol!

Got a name and download link for this awesome tool by Ref?

Inquiring minds want to know! (namely, me.)

Well, it's a thought, but my interests run more towards little 300-ton merchants and the like. There were a lot more of those in coastal and Channel convoys than you might think. And, I may decide I'm not any good at it and start looking for something else to do. You never know.

Well, while you're at it, SS, how about another small "boat" that gets very little attention around here? I'm referring to a type II u-boat that is comparable in detail as Tomi's excellent work on the VIIC.

Just an idea.

But a really well-rendered fishing ketch or harbor tugboat would be awesome! Harbors and coastal areas are really lacking in the life that should be there.

Here's wishing you fun and a quick learning curve, SS!

Me, I'm still stuck in the stone age. Awesome talents with paper or canvas, but computer art still kicks my butt!

Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I don't even know yet whether I can do anything! It's going to take time.

Yeah, I've been accused of being overly enthusiastic and optimistic. :p

I suppose that's the particular disease of being a dreamer.

I'm still excited for you, though, and looking foward to what you may achieve.
